I grew up on North Hull where there were a few rough pubs but usually felt safe as being a local I knew most people in the pub but never felt safe in The Greenwood for some reason. Earl De Grey, it allways had a real menacing feel about the place and I used to make sure my back was against a wall. Blue Heaven which as I remember was on Southcoates Lane.
My uncle was landlord of Earl for a while. As a teenager living down Boulevard I thought I'd pay him a visit in the hope of free beer. He ran out from behind the bar when he spotted me come in and made sure it was obvious to all present that I was with him. It was the early-80s and I wore suits from Oxfam (trousers pegged), had a Travis Bickle-style mohican and wore a drop earring (forgive me). 6 foot 2 and 11 stone in my socks. And I drank lager top. If my uncle hadn't kept me close during the time I was there I would probably have been tied to a chair and set on fire by the locals.
I don't think I've ever been in a NHE or an OPE battle cruiser. Been in most on Bransholme, Longhill, Bilton Grange and Greatfield though. Once nearly got turfed out of Earl De Gray for unruly behaviour. Wild night was that one.
Quiz night in Elephant and Castle: Question one: Who the **** are you looking at?! The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
We used to call it 'Foreskin' When me and my mates lived on the Garths....Happy days.. Now it looks like a doss house for various pissheads and ner'do'wells
Never went in Elephant and Castle but I regularly went in Crown several times a week - was seeing a barmaid - and the regulars from Elephant woukd pop in now and again to cause a rumpus. Roughest I've been in was probably Cheese, when I first started going into town there was a major fight every Saturday night like clockwork and it was the first I knew to switch to all plastic drinking receptacles.
Never ever thought of Hull pubs in those terms. I was a weedy 16-18 year old from Brough so had no reason to be cocky. Then my local was the Hayfield in Chapeltown. Leeds so after I don't recall ever thinking anywhere in Hull was particularly rough.
'On reflection, ie not sure how we survived was with DBT at Sunderland. After travelling up there and getting thrown out of the Stadium (ask DBT), we went to the nearest and let them know we wasn't local for 90 minutes(we were texting absent mates comparing it to the Cod at the time). It was packed, very 'passionate' Sunlan watching a big screen. Sadly very pissed and rubbishly macho so no danger of backing down. DBT to this day claims he was spiked and useless, I was pissed and useless (anyway). The locals, they were desperate to know if we knew xx from Hull who they'd met on 'Engalnd duty', so pubload of banning orders vs 2 pissed, useless twats. We carried on regardless. In hindsight, thank **** we did n't get that equaliser we were screaming for. The journey back was eventful too. but I'll let DBT choose to tell us. So my two visits to S of L were rubbish Julian!!
