When you think about their meaning, it's odd you can't say words like **** and **** in front of the kids, but you can call them buggers and sods.
Very true. I grew up think that they were fairly light words: 'eeh, come 'ere yer little bugger' etc. Got a bit of a shock when I discovered their true meaning.
My missus is from the north west and everyone over there used the saying "he got more toys than soft Mick". I don't even know where to start with that one. https://forums.pesfan.com/showthread.php?148113-Who-the-hell-is-Soft-Mick
I saw on something like Myth Busters (but not Myth Busters) that they dissected that and it's actually true.
"It's looking a bit black over Will's mothers" is one from round here I think when it turns dark and look like rain. Who the frig is Will, or his mother?
'Bill's mother/Will's mother' is a First World War saying, Bill is Kaiser Wilhelm ll and it refers to storms coming from the east.
My dad used to say 'a full cupboard is a happy cupboard' which I quite like. Mind your own beeswax is an odd saying. I've just made this saying up - "He keeps his hogs well peeled". Make of it what you will.
If someone ever asks me if they can do something with my blessing my standard response is "knock yourself out". I don't know why, it's a bloody stupid saying.
