Following confirmation of the club’s relegation from the Premier League today, Sunderland AFC chairman Ellis Short said: “Like any supporter, my initial reaction is one of sadness, disappointment, anger and frustration. After 10 consecutive seasons as a top-flight club, the second longest in our 138-year history, it is hard for everyone to take. “It is an especially cruel blow for our supporters, who have shown tremendous faith in the club. They backed the team, home and away, in huge numbers throughout the season and it is fair to say this season they have once again been relentless in their support. I am truly sorry that we have not been able to retain our top-flight status for them. “I acknowledge that during my ownership mistakes have been made, particularly in the area of player recruitment, and as a result we have found ourselves struggling to survive in recent seasons. We had massive disruption during the summer transfer window and an unprecedented number of injuries throughout the season. These are difficulties which we have been unable to overcome and we are paying the price for that now. “We need to improve, both on and off the field, and despite the bitter disappointment of today there is a strong determination to do so throughout the club. There is significant work to be done over the summer and when the season is concluded, we intend to share our plans to move forward with our supporters”. Garnished it with an irrelevant fact and forgot to apologise. Nice one Ellis, you've said nowt really.
Reads like a statement that has been prepared for some time as it only contains his disappointment that we all feel. He is in the driving seat but at least we can stop sticking plasters over major wounds. How we go about the significant work he mentions will be interesting to watch over the next few months.
Injuries due to being overworked in training or poor medical staff, What happened with Kirchoff and Watmore like. And not mentioning the main reason which was not getting a top manager in from the start and backing him. Man u would have went down if he had stopped there hehe, where next them up the road with a bit of luck, Swansea and the Boro to go with us I suspect and the Swansea game will be a bit heated I think.
There's got to be a massive overhaul of the playing and coaching staff for starters. I can count on one hand who i'd keep.
Disagree. No need for a root and branch operation, just a return of the injured and reshaping of a few positions. For all we have played badly in some games we have lost, we have come close in others that people are conveniently forgetting. Our lack of quality has been there for years.
Disagree. The whole thing has been run terribly for years with no clear philosophy or direction. Short has shown huge naiveity and lurched between managers of different types and had off/on relationships with the DofF model. A clear long term plan and direction needs developing and sticking to and the correct people for the correct jobs need identifying.
Same medical staff as Sam brought in. What do you know about the training schedules? You're talking **** as per usual. Don't you owe @Desix in a Row an apology for using his mate's nephew as pawn to vent your sad little frustrations? Horrible ****.
I was a bit negative on your post - Montys a disgrace about as much use as my mobiles internet connection
Go back to the direction shown by NQ and RK who signed journeymen footballers at huge wages and long contracts, presumably to cement our place in the Prem whilst building for the future. Didn't happen so were given more money they asked for and we were edging close to the cliff from then. Look at who the DfF signed, again on long contracts. It ain't all down to ES as I feel he was naive enough to listen to footballing people.
