The man from Sacriston, sadly passed away 6years ago today. One of the finest gents to have ever graced the game of football. He"ll be up there smiling, and still ****ing up all his quotes.
He seemed to be a lovely person This bit's for Billy . . . . If knighthoods were justified for being 'nice' he, along with millions of other people, deserved one Other than that, I can think of absolutely no justification for him being awarded one but that's what I think
It always struck me in this modern technological world of twitter, email and txts that contrary to the norm of jokes and piss takes when someone famous dies, I didn't receive one single joke or such when thecsad news broke about SBR. . His loveable personality and the huge respect which he was held in, from all football fans, prevented it happening. He was and still is loved on Wearside as well as Tyneside, which in itself tells you all you need to know about the Great man. RIP Sir Bobby.
Other than being the second most successful England manager in history of course and barring another bloody penalty shootout v Germany, maybe could have eclipsed Sir Alf by winning the World Cup on foreign soil. If ever a man did deserve an honour it was SBR.
He got us to the semi-final by accident, because of injuries and suspensions (I seem to remember) to/for the players that he would have preferred to pick, and he did extremely well at Ipswich (a relatively very small club) - for which he deserved huge credit but, apart from that, his success was all abroad (which didn't help this country at all) That's why, although I think that he was a very personable/lovable man, and I liked him, I don't understand the merits of his knighthood again, but that's what I think
Yep he died on July 31st, my birthday. It was the only thing that spoilt that day, especially as my dad knew him well and was devastated. RIP.. A funny man with his words who just bloody loved the game..
I didn't 'twig' either . . . . Happy Birthday V-Joe Billy's created a new Happy Birthday 'thread' but I'm not saying it twice, marra Suffice to say . . . . I hope that you have/are having a good-un, young man
Even if he got a knighthood, as soon as you die, you are stripped of it and all honours for that matter. Not getting into whether he deserved one or not while living, RIP Bobby.
Had the pleasure of meeting him twice, a true gentleman. Always had time for others and get him talking footy and he was like your best mate, shame the press treat him the way they did and some of the barcodes who turned on him. RIP Sir Bobby.
While I respect the guy and admire him in many ways he did spent many days in the old Roker Park boardroom in discussions with our directors, apparently about taking over at Roker, before signing a new no doubt improved contract at Ipswich this was long before he moved to Newcastle. The great Don Revie did exactly the same and doubtless others too, no surprise there, football is a sneaky business.
The difference being he would have been invited to look at the situation and reported back to his directors; Revie went about it a different way like many others, including Clough, who used us for their own ends. The owner/directors at Ipswich were the Cobbold brothers who probably knew a good thing when they saw it and never interfered in the club's running.
Smashing post Comm, just watched his acceptance ceremony for sports personality 2007 on the BBC site, vintage Bobby and even more poignant with what was looming.
I remember that clockstander. I heard him being interviewed on radio soon afterwards and he said, whilst he would have liked the job at Sunderland, "I think there are problems there that not even I can put right". He didn't say any more, so we'll probably never know exactly what problems he was talking about. But it didn't sound like it was about money - or not his wages anyway!
I went to an Eric gates talk in many moons ago and he was saying that Bobby was not a man to be messed with. The gentle persona that he portrayed perhaps hid the hard underbelly that he had and what made him such a good man manager.
Not sure about that or Clough, (he is my all time hero, time and place and all that ) he said many times that he wanted to sign for us, I am still devastated that he never did, due to useless directors imo.
