    http://www.footymad.net/results_fixtures/1964_1965/southampton/index.shtml - it may well not have been the last one but you can look for other years on there if you have nothing better to do. No, I have no idea who scored. I was a year old.

    Last one was probably 2009/10 against Exeter away.

    I wasn't born until 1978 but I googled it. I hadn't heard of George O Brien until now. Saints legend!

    And I do not have anything better to do so I will go through that thanks.

    Its a bit of a needle in hay stack tho.

    George O Brien

    He began his career with Blairhall Colliery before becoming a professional with Scottish Football League club Dunfermline Athletic in 1952.[1] He spent five years with Dunfermline, scoring 25 league goals in 93 appearances. In 1957, he moved to England to play for Leeds United in the Football League. He was transferred to Southampton in 1959, having scored six times in 44 appearances during his time at Elland Road.[1]

    O'Brien spent six years at The Dell, scoring 154 league goals in 244 matches.[1] He left Southampton in March 1966,[2] spending a few months with Leyton Orient before moving on toAldershot in December 1966, where he finished his playing career.[1]

    This week's muse: Coleridge

    In St. Mary's did the Liebherrs
    A stately pleasure-dome decree:
    Where Fonte, the sacred captain, ran
    Through pitches measureless to man
    Down to a solent sea.
    Where Virg Van Dyke defends the ground
    Like walls and towers were girdled round;
    And there were Koemans bright with strenuous drills,
    Where blossomed many an England number three;
    And here were coaches ancient as the hills,
    Embracing sunny smiles of Sammy Lee.

    But oh! that deep romantic power matchday granted
    And Stoked us to a fervour like no other!
    A Sainted place! As holy and enchanted
    And so fiercely guarded that no foe e'er came undaunted
    By Clasie stalking like a demon-lover!
    And from this power, with ceaseless pressure seething,
    The West Ham lads in fast thick pants were breathing,
    A mighty Victor momently threatened forced:
    Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
    Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
    Or weedy cockneys within the job queue flail:
    And mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
    Our midfield moves as swiftly as the sacred river.
    Mane, meandering with a mazy motion,
    Through Reid and Collins an easy path he ran,
    Then reached the goal so glorious to man,
    And smashed the ball so deep as lost to a lifeless ocean;
    And ’mid the tumult Koeman heard from far
    Southampton voices prophesying war!
    Our Austin he rose up high for a header
    Floated beyond what any keeper saves;
    Where was heard the mingled measure
    From the Northam lot from in their caves.
    It was a miracle of rarest song,
    A witty chant about our own Shane Long!

    A Fraser with a huge hand
    In a vision once I saw:
    It was an Arsenal game we played
    And many mighty shots he saved,
    Waving not a jot, I wager.
    Could I revive within me
    His symphony and song,
    To such a deep delight ’twould win me,
    That with chanting loud and long,
    I would build that dome in air,
    That sunny dome! that joyous life!
    And all who heard should see them there,
    And all should cry, Oh When! The Saints!

    Pelle's flashing eyes, his perfect hair!
    Weave a circle round him thrice,
    And close your eyes with holy dread
    For he on honey-dew hath fed,
    And drunk the milk of Paradise.

    Just remember George O'Brien playing his last few games for Saints when I first started worshipping at the old Dell when I was a wee laddie, found out some years later that George actually lived in a Saints house next door to our family house.
    After he finished playing he ran a pub in Freemantle which I used a few times, I remember thinking he was a pretty miserable, rude bastard. The last I heard of him was that he was driving taxi's around town, wonder if he's any happier?

    Wonder if it's because they rescheduled the match, so have left the press conference where it was (presumably tomorrow).

    From the evidence of his sub appearance. I don't think Pelle is fit enough to start a match. I think this is the last chance for the Mane - Long combination. Can't fault their efforts, but both have been found wanting in promising positions over the last few matches. Expect Austin and Pelle to be figuratively breathing down their necks on the bench.

    Negative, I was going, moved to Monday, then not going, rescheduled again, too late, made plans, going to Gillingham v Swindon now.

    Positive, confidence is high, we are playing well and strong in all positions, time to burst them bubbles.

    It would be a brave man who takes Long out of the starting line up. His work rate is phenomenal at both ends of the pitch

    Merson says 2-2. No reason for this just thinks it might be a good game. Well a good game is 4-0 Saints ;)

    Wahey! And it's my birthday tomorrow. I reckon a couple of goals (for Saints) and a clean sheet is a fair ask for our double celebration.

    (I'll be 33)

    Tough match this one, I'd be happy taking a point back to London. Good news for us hammers is Lawro has it down as a home win.
