Hello all and welcome back to another match day thread by Saintsfcfan. With the international break being as boring, if not more, than watching P****y play, I thought it best to look towards the weekend as the proper football returns. On Sunday Saints will hope to continue their impressive run of form, having gone unbeaten for 6 games and not conceding a goal. Saints will break a record for longest run of clean sheets (I believe it is a 100yr old or greater record but correct me if I'm wrong) should they keep Burnley from scoring. Burnley have started life reasonably well for a promoted side, their 2-0 victory over Liverpool their most noticeable result. Before the international break they almost held Arsenal to a goalless draw, however were undone by what can only be described as a very controversial goal, but let's not open up that can of worms again. Signings such as Defour and Hendricks have looked good buys, the former a player I have been most impressed with. They are yet to win away from home this season, cue that victory on Sunday. Saints last played Burnley in the 2014-15 season: Burnley 1-0 Saints - a bad day all round, Hesketh injured and tadic missed penalty followed by a defensive collapse to allow Burnley to win. Saints 2-0 Burnley - Kelvin Davis the hero as he replaced an injured Forster. He made a couple of brilliant stops whilst an own goal and Shane Long gave us the points. The international break has not been kind to Saints, as Shane Long and Ryan Betrand have picked up injuries. On the other hand, Dusan Tadic has been on fire and their have been returns from injuries for Jay Rodriguez and record signing Sofiane Boufal. Likely team: Forster Cedric Fonte VVD Targett Romeu Hojbjerg Davis Tadic Redmond Austin Bench: McCarthy, Martina, Clasie, Hesketh, Rodriguez, Boufal, Olomola. Prediction: Saints to win 2-0 but Burnley will make it a tough match. Goals from Charlie and Tadic. Boufal to get on last 15 mins, leaving half the fans praising the unbelievable skills and how we have signed the new messi, the other half wondering why we wasted 16m on the worst footballer since Ali Dia. COYR!
At last...real football. My usual schizophrenia....Saints playing, but if they play, they can lose Even I acknowledge that we should win (hopefully with a clean sheet)....but isn't that worrying in itself COYR.
Burnley are more toothless than us up front with only 5 goals scored, compared to our 7, in the league. We've also each only won 2 games out of 7. And they were unlucky vs Arsenal. 1-0 Saints (Redmond 27').
Tough game this one, I hope Targett is okay for it as wouldn't like having no proper full backs. I reckon Redmond might grab a goal in this. 2-1 Saints. Wonder if Boufal will make bench... Also will be interesting to see how Claude rotates for these 3 games... I'm sure there's players who have missed the EL games so far who won't be happy to not play at San Siro (thinking Jose).
Burnley will sit back, pack their defence and try and hit us on the break I feel it is going to be a very frustrating game and one where we will all need to be very patient and take what few chances we get
I think we have to prepare ourselves for a few 0-0 draws because lower teams will try to lock us out and we aren't overflowing with goals...for us, the difference between 1 point and 3 may be just down to luck (on our side or the defenders). However, at the end of the season, those draws may be very valuable.
"Boufal to get on last 15 mins, leaving half the fans praising the unbelievable skills and how we have signed the new messi, the other half wondering why we wasted 16m on the worst footballer since Ali Dia"
I'm worried about Boufal...let the guy settle in before assessing him.* *doesn't apply if he is brilliant of course.
Sunday 16 October 2016 Kick off:- 4 p.m. Southampton v Burnley Referee: Mike Dean. Assistants: S Long, I Hussin: Fourth official: P Tierney.
I had fixed it firmly into my head that our next game was in Milan. Imagine how happy I am to discover a newly-minted (to me) extra game this weekend. We'll stuff 'em. Vin
Looks like McQueen could start as Target carrying a slight injury from international training. Would rather keep Matt back for the Milan game and don't want to see other players played out of position.
