What sports used to be on telly that are no longer shown? I used to watch a bit of billiards but that has gone, better and more skilful than snooker i thought.
Trying to think of some but it just made me think of something else... When I was a kid we used to get these strips of paper in thin red rolls, with little dots on, you lined them up to the metal 'nose' on a dart then chuck the dart in the air and when it landed there was a bang. And them little foam toy planes with the plastic bit for the weight, they were 10p. And spud guns, do any kids play with this **** anymore?
On Grandstand (for younger viewers it used to be a must watch BBC Saturday afternoon sports programme) they used to show motor cross (I think that's,the title) which consisted of teams racing on cross-country tracks and tarmac. There was always a team from the Army and they drove anything from 3 tonne wagons to minis and shooting brakes, there was always good action and usually vehicles ending up upside down or bogged down in thick mud, used to enjoy that whilst waiting for the football results if for some reason I wasn't able to go to the match.
The wife, for some unknown reason, got the boy a spud gun for xmas. Looked blo0dy lethal so that didn't last long. Those gliders are still knocking round mate but I reckon are a lot flimsier than they were in my day. They break up on contact with anything which then just leaves you with a screaming child. I remember those transfers you could buy. You would get some kind of background and have to put the transfers on making your own scene. Sadly I would play for ages with these. Those were the days eh.
Another one was The Monte Carlo rally in the late 50s early 60s, those days the popular vehicle to race in was the Mini, there was always lots of snow in the Alps and it seemed quite hazardous, don't know if it is still part of the rally car calender but used to enjoy the thrills and spills.
Yeah, and them model plastic planes that had about 2000 pieces and all them stickers, my brother was brilliant at making them, I'd usually get about 10 minutes in and start crying at mine.
It's a Knockout was one of the funniest programmes of all time, and Stuart Hall's laugh was so infectious
And bar billiards. The table with the holes in and the wooden mushroom thingy. I seem to recall there was a 10 pin bowling craze at one time. Don`t see much of that now.
Was ten pin bowling at Centre Parks at Penrith last weekend, not played for over 20 years and you could tell, I was abysmal, enjoyed it though. Don't know if there are any bowling centres around our area.
The weekly excitement called Crown Green Bowling and then there was the Sheep Dog one where a panel awarded points. Excitement knew no bounds.
