What the Bear has ironically posted is a list of strikers that represented our overly safe approach towards investing in players. Yes they weren't dreadful buys, but they weren't the quality that would have allowed us to take it that one step further to a major title win. I can count at least 4 realistic chances since our last PL title win that we could have won the title, if we took a risk and not penny pinched. Yes we've loosened the purse strings since, but i don't think it's enough to maintain top standard, as proved by our poor showings in the PL and CL.

It's not like you go out and actively choose to buy a dud at our level. Sometimes players just don't work out be it for the system, squad, personality or whatever.

    Higuain was definitely a miss..

Selling RVP was a terrible move too, I'd rather we took the financial hit as we'd have almost certainly won the league with him that year.

Who else was there that you know we were after and could definitely have got. That's the problem, knowing what goes on behind the scenes. Unless you get a player like Higuain saying he nearly came it's all speculation.

    Unfortunately those are the realities....

What more can i say? He either made it or he didn't. Obviously there are circumstances but at no point was he the WC you guys had. He might have been but he was a long way off.

Henry was a winger when he joined us.

    Just saying.

A little history lesson to educate you about Henry. He was always a CF but Wenger tactically converted him to a left winger at Monaco in 1995 before he joined Juve and then to us.

    Just saying.

    https://www.britannica.com/biography/Thierry-Henry

"He joined FC Versailles in 1992, and, after attracting other club scouts, he was signed by AS Monaco in 1995. Although Henry played as a striker until he was 17, he switched to left wing for Monaco. Monaco won the 1997 French club championship, and Henry’s game noticeably improved."

    https://web.archive.org/web/20070627160105/http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=336314

"Catalano also wanted Henry to complete a course at France's elite football academy, Clairefontaine, and although the director there was initially unwilling to accept Henry on the basis of unimpressive academic results, the player was allowed to complete the course, opening the door to the youth team at Monaco, whose manager was one Arséne Wenger.

Henry later signed as a professional with Monaco, and made his first team debut for them in 1995. Wenger initially deployed Henry as a left winger, calculation that the player's electrifying pace and natural ability on the ball would unhinge full-backs on the flanks rather more effectively than centre-backs through the middle."

17 <laugh> He played in goal one time when he was 8. Was he a goalie too?

He was a winger when we bought him.

Just saying, but don't let me get in the way of your unreasonable Wenger hatred.

We bought a winger. You re-write history as badly as you interpret the present and predict the future. :emoticon-0136-giggl

Very amusing. Let me say it again as you clearly have difficulty reading, he was a striker until he met Wenger in 1995 where he TACTICALLY changed him to left wing. He played for one season as a left winger for them, went to Juve and flopped as a left winger. He then came to us and Wenger played him in his original position of striker at Arsenal.

Wenger deployed him on the left for tactical reasons and it worked. But he originally a CF.

I still think Costa would be great idea.

    His goalscoring record is superb.
More affordable than most the top strikers around.
    Would fit our system.

He might be clinically insane but he would improve our side for sure.

Agree. He might be a cnut but he is an excellent competitor on the field and gives any defence nightmares. He would bang in over 20 goals in the league for sure.

One of the weird things about football clubs and transfers these days.

A rumour gets started on social media. The rumour builds momentum and makes it into the mainstream media channels.
The signing doesnt happen - Fans vent frustration at Club for a signing that was totally fabricated.

Arsenal have the largest most active fanbase on social media (particuarly twitter) so we seem to be the most prone to this little cycle.

true... but i'm not sure the fans are upset at signings not happening. I think its more to no progress (progress being winning the league or CL), no world class players being signed in the position that you have needed (DM, CB, CF) for the past 10 years and just a general lack of ambition (your so called 200 million warchest which if you had bought the right players in would now be more).

When your number 1 strikers since RVP left 5 years ago has been Chamakh followed by Giroud and back up by Podolski, Bendtner, Welbeck, Sanogo no wonder people are pissed

Based on today's game against France...I think we should sign: Dembele and Lemar! Come on Wenger...get it done!

Dembele and Mbappe are players who are out of our reach, these are players destined for the big three in Europe (Barca,Bayern and Real Madrid). Gone are the days when Wenger could get these guys before they become well known, when was the last time we signed a highly rated youngster who was already well known to every big club in Europe?

Yes for sure - but was looking at more realistic targets :) Even though @Sanj dont see Dembele as realistic (and he is probably right).

'Sources' saying Lyon have officials in London to discuss Lacazette to Arsenal transfer.

Rumours are Wenger is willing to let Giroud go as part of the deal.
