This was supremely awkward though - lined up in a "What Happened Next" round coming to you soon!

Great competition with all the first three jumping over 7m so well done to all the ladies. Wonderful 200m for ladies Fran with athletics at its best. Schippers managed to drag 2nd and 3rd in sub 22 and 4th and 5th (Asher-Smith) through in PBs.

Hope Ron is happy with the Schippers victory. I feel Schippers is going to be a superstar who will transcend the world of athletics in similar fashion to Usain Bolt. She's tall, attractive, intelligent. I want to marry her!! Maybe Pompey Lapras should as he is much nearer her age.

A surprising Russian victory in the 110m but any guy who runs sub 13 deserves the gold.

Always pleased when medals are shared out...unless GB could win them all of course. :)

Terrific 100m hurdles for the ladies with all bar one under 13 sec. Very tight finish but Jamaica is singing and dancing again.

Found some very short highlights of the walkers and without even trying I could see them running [that is, both feet in the air]. Thing is they get away with it.

About time they abandoned this anachronism....makes no sense, why not have hopping races or skipping. It's an old event, but video evidence show it up, so best to let it go.

I hope she is not feeling sorry for herself. She's young and can only get better. What I love is great athletics and if someone's performance in getting a gold leads others to PBs that is great sport. And it has happened quite frequently this week. The only event I am dreading is the 1500m for men as that has been a farce. Getting a gold medal in the Olympics in a time over 3.40 is shocking. I hope the East Africans in the race really go for it and get a time closer to 3.30 otherwise we'll have those Turkish guys again who know how to put in a fast lap.

I was thinking about this the other day. I remember way back in 1999 when Michael Johnson set the world record for the 400m at 43.18 seconds, a record which, amazingly, still stands 16 years later. There was talk then that Johnson was thinking of moving to middle-distance and trying the 800m and maybe even the 1500m. He never did, but just imagine if he had done, or if someone like Usain Bolt could build up the stamina to try it. 3:30 could be smashed, and sub 3:00 would be a real possibility, incredible as it seems with the lack of genuine world class runners at that distance. Why doesn't David Rudisha move up?

I suppose runners are like racehorses to a certain extent. Those of West African ancestry have the muscular build for sprinting which while desirable for the sprint events may not be too desirable beyond 800m. I suppose 800m is the start of middle distance running where runners have a lighter frame but also need an explosive finish. I suspect Michael Johnson would have struggled at that event due to his muscle. Bolt is the Nijinsky (the racehorse not the dancer) of the track and perhaps could run equally well at any event up to 1500 given that he is muscular, but not over muscular, tall and lean and would gallop up the metres. But he can't go for everything.

I read somewhere that the 400 m is the toughest race, because it is the longest sprint....since all longer races are not run at full pelt.

I always felt the 400m should be banned. It should have only ever been used as a punishment for naughty boys! I liked the longer distances, 1500m was the minimum with 3000 and 5000 perfect - at least you could have a jog and a chat during those!

What an awful 5000m, with a time of 13.50! The majority of those runners were capable of running sub 13 for the event. Well done Mo but the Ethiopians and Kenyans could have made it a much better race. Thankfully Rupp did not medal!

It was worth watching the early laps to enjoy the last two.

Can't remember whether it is the 400m or the 400m Hurdles, I think it is the hurdles, because they used to call it the man killer. Women didn't run it back then, though they do now.
If you listen to Michael Johnson, the 400m is not an all-out sprint. They do have bits of the race where they relax.
