Did you see any of the Alexander Armstrong series he's just done, Lost Italy or something like? I thought they were brilliant & would certainly recommend a watch if you haven't. I've done Lake Garda & Sicily over the last couple of years & thinking about Florence & Pisa this year.
Two years ago we went to Lake Garda, loved it. I will be in my favourite hotel again end of Feb. H10 Rubicon Palace Playa Branca Lanzarote. 5 times to the same hotel. Premium drinks, top nosh, all inclusive and I love the diving there.
Not done the Amalfi coast yet but had a honeymoon around the corner in Sorrento a few years ago and loved it. Went to Pompei, which was amazing and Capri for the day. Stayed in a hotel with an amazing view over the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius in the background. Last year went to Lido de Jesolo, near Venice, which I wasn't that bothered about visiting but was blown away by it. The year before, we went to Lake Garda and really enjoyed a chilled out week, visiting various resorts via the regular ferries running throughout the day. Will almost certainly go back to Italy again this summer but not sure exactly where yet. Still plenty of places we haven't been yet to choose from, Rome, Florence, Tuscany etc. If you like Italian food over here, you'll be in for a proper treat, as I've always found it to be amazing, even in small cafes if you just want to share a pizza or pasta with a bottle of Peroni or Morretti for lunch.
Avon, Indiana for a couple of weeks at the end of May to see my youngest lad and his new wife, can't wait.
Nothing planned but I'm reading this thread and listening to Gram Parsons in the background and I've got a sudden urge to go to southern California.
Beach holidays are my idea of absolute hell. I'd be bored after a day. I know mates who have been to the Maldives and Aruba etc and described them as OK for a day or two. Beyond that - boring. I'd rather go skiing or somewhere to see something interesting. Once you've seen a beach you've seen them all.
Ernie Yes I've been to the Maldives. We went to an island called Meeru. Absolutely amazing place. Totally spoiled other beach holidays since We stayed in a Jacuzzi Water Villa (free upgrade from a Water Villa, but miles better so I'd do that again) Out on stilts over the sea, with a balcony over the water and steps straight down into the sea. I'd check the time of the year though, it's very different at different times http://www.meeru.com/rooms-jacuzzi-water-villas Loads of snorkelling on a reef a few hundred yards out, and scuba diving if you go further out Other than that though there is **** all else to do, which is what we wanted, but don't go thinking there's loads of activities. You can sit with a beer watching sharks and rays swimming past your balcony on a night for hours though We walked round the entire island every day after breakfast, which took about 15 mins (it's only 1200m long and even narrower across)
My longest summer holiday as a kid living in Hull was a rainy week in Withernsea.............staying in a caravan.
I have been to Florence and Pisa - Highly recommend either. Even simple foods in Italy taste amazing - we found this simple restaurant that served simple Italian dishes with locally sourced product/ingredients. The Spaghetti and Tomatoes were like nothing on this earth - tremendous. Italy is one of my favourite countries - it's where we'll be skiing at Easter.
We found similar, the fish dishes around Garda were great & we loved the street food around Palermo. I just love everything about Italy, apart from the corrupt football.
My favourite city is Venice and my missus loves Pointless so yes we did watch the programmes. I would also recommend Slovenia and Croatia. Love both countries. No real beaches, but crystal clear water and great food. I really do fancy Sicily though.
At Lake Garda the hotel we stayed in cooked proper home cooked food. Nothing like what was in the restaurants. For a joke I asked for pizza, I am sure the waiter told me to **** off in Italian.
It's a cracking place, done bits of Northern Italy - Milan, Florence, Pisa. There's enough to keep you busy in Florence for a while. Loads of piazza's, art, leather school and Officine Panerai originated from Florence so the first workshop/shop is in Florence near the Cathedral. Done a couple of places on the Swiss/Italian border Livigno and Bormio. There's not many places I'd go back to, I'd happily go back to Florence.
Went to Mauritius last year Had a great time, but it's not a patch on Maldives Mrs Ernie clearly has good taste, in holidays at least..
Her taste has never been in doubt. Her grasp of economics however, that's a different matter. I've just looked at prices for this tropical heaven. Cheap it ain't.
