Be interested to see whether he lasts; the NYT hasn't always done a great job of matching its top calibre sportswriters with their readers' interests. Net result is that you get some genuinely excellent bits of journalism -- or in the case of a guy I know, a deep-delve blog on somewhat esoteric sports matters mixed with sillier pieces -- that end up a bit unloved.

Sorry don't believe it. West Ham are reasonably high up and every player they buy ends up being worthless. Sorry space bar playing around. I meant worth less.
And in a lot of cases they buy them at such an old age they either retire or are worth pennies when they get rid.

Well done to Chris Houghton for another Brighton win.

Think he has been a bit unlucky in management. Would like to see him get promoted even if it's just for 1 season.

They will go up, and next season they will stay up.

Fleetwood Town won at Sheff Utd and are in the League 1 play offs. I think they were 9th tier in 2005. Favourite FL team now.

It is, but haven't they been bankrolled for a lot of it?

Might be mistaking them for someone else.

Interesting trial in Scottish football last night with Ayr Utd becoming the first team to use a 4th sub in extra time.

Don't know if it will be rolled out across the leagues. If tonights game goes to et, wonder if we would use another sub if we could. I'm sure most clubs would.

‪The main problem I can see with penalty 'take-ons' is that the taker is going to get fouled going past the keeper, resulting in a penalty‬

Pleased to report Zola still hasn't won since he took over from Rowett. 4 draws 5 defeats.

Apart from the fact that I can't even see the ball, and assuming there wasn't a foul before the invisible ball entered the net, I suspect that they don't have goal-line technology in Spain.? Only last Wednesday night did I think that Forster's miraculous fumble-cum-super save would have been given as a goal if left to a linesman at Anfield.

Just watching the buildup to the Real Madrid v Real Sociedad game and 2 things were mentioned that I found interesting.

    1. They were talking about Rulli (the Sociedad goalkeeper who I think is one of the best young keepers around, and is someone I have wanted Saints to sign for the last couple of years) apparently has some agreement in place with Man City where they can buy him for €12m anytime before the end of the 2018 World Cup, and Ballague reckons he definitely won't be leaving Sociedad this summer.

    2. The pundits were praising Juanmi and how well he is doing for Sociedad this season. Did we ever get to the bottom of what happened with him here? Was he just homesick and couldn't settle? Seems odd that we only gave him a season to adjust to the league to then sell him at (reportedly) a loss unless something else was going on.

With Juanmi, I think it was a combination of things. Understandably, I don't think he was the happiest he's ever been at a football club, but that set in after a while. He had Koeman as his manager, and Ronald didn't change the 1st Eleven much unless provoked by injuries or loss of form. So Juanmi tended to get substitute appearances, and just like Gaston before him, he'd showed flashes of what he was capable of. And, again like Gaston, he has shone elsewhere. Not every player is going to make it as a Saint.
