So the Olympics are upon us, well nearly. Who do you think has been our best Olympian? Who do you think are bankers for gold? and what are your views on the drug scandal to hit the Olympics? Plus any other Olympic related stuff.
Daley Thomson for me is our best Olympian. Little Mo for definitely 1 gold at least. I think it was right that the governing body passed it down to the individuals to ban or not to ban on an event by event basis so long as there is sufficient timings to test athletes prior to events going ahead. There are Russian athletes out there who are clean and should not be tarnished by the cheats within the Russian camp. If there is insufficient time for testing then they should have grown a set of balls and banned the lot of em.
Britain has had some great athletes over the years. Brendan Foster, Steve Cram, Sally Gunnell, Colin Jackson, Linford Christie, Steve Ovett. You can go on & on. I've played snooker with David Bedford in Borehamwood WMC.
Men's 4x100 metres team might get silver (Jamica the best) our cyclists are always great. Will Bolt win again in the 100 metres ?. I remember the 84 Olympics, Cram, Coe and Ovett in both the 800 and 1500 finals, they were fantastic to watch, top 3 in the world at both distances. Mo is becoming our best ever Olympian now. Daley the best up to now.
Chris Hoy's got a fair haul as well mind, I'd imagine his bottom half fused onto Redgrave's top half would be the ultimate athlete.
Who's the best is always going to argued upon. There are some sports, like swimming, they dish them out by the bucketload. So I'd discount who's the best on the size of the haul. But to be the best over 5 separate olympic games, over a 16 year stretch has to be the marker doesn't it? @crumble bungle I'd have said Daley was our best until Redgrave got his last gold medal as well.
Not really mate, you can argue the discipline also. Greatest Olympian... could be a fencer if they won 6 golds in 6 games, it happens to be 5 in 5 for rowing, which is a credible discipline. The greatest Olympians for me, are athletes in track and field who have broken record after record. Haile Gebrselassie or Carl Lewis for me. Bolt will take top place if he cleans up in Rio.
Yep, totally agree the discipline bit. To be the best in the world for 16 or even 20 years is an extraordinary feat. That's how I would judge the best - the period of absolute dominance in a discipline. Imooc. And how do you start to compare disciplines / sports? Another question that many would never be able to agree upon. Agree with your list though. I think you'd have to include Michael Johnson in that list as well. He was undefeated for years.
Defo, but Bolt blitzed his 200m time like he was just some mild irritant. For me it's track and field, athletics, I like the other sports, but the best part of the olympics for me is the track and field... just MOOC.
Don't forget it is "our" Olympian, i picked Daley as he had ten different events and done it on his own. For all Steves achievement was phenomenal he did have another 3 blokes in the boat with him.
Good shout for worlds best Olympian along with Carl Lewis. If Bolt does it again this time he could just edge past those 2.
I take it that must be one of the characters in that show.. last time I watched a soap opera, Dirty Den and Angie were in the Queen Vic and Eddie and Stan were having a beer in the Rovers Return.
