I just don't get how it makes any difference to fans....no player (heterosexual or homosexual) has sex on the pitch. Do fans think there are no homosexual fans watching matches. Of course, we are all probably making the assumption that those 8% are all white knuckle draggers, but they probably include some Muslim or Christian fundamentalists.

That number is actually (pleasantly) suprisingly low in my book.

Unfortunately there hasn't been a poll for "fans who will still go to games but chant/shout stuff at openly gay players" as that number would be pretty high I would imagine.

Although if you think about the actual numbers, it's huge. If St. Mary's had 30,000 people watching a game, 2,400 of them would be homophobic enough to go home if one of the players announced he was gay. That is truly shocking in 2016.

Yeah that's true. I didn't actually read it to be honest and thought it asked about being comfortable about it rather than not attend.

You're right that is awful really when put like that.

Also ridiculous. I'd like to see how big their sample size was and how they selected them. Bias has been introduced somehow...I can believe 8% could be unhappy about homosexuality (not that it's right, but 8% is possible), but not to the extent that they would abandon watching football or any other activity.

Mourinho has a cheek criticising England for possibly selecting Rashford for the U21s. Playing for the U21s is not an insult...I've felt for years that we should play our best players in the U21 tournaments. Winning is a habit.

It is a legitimate poll. Stop thinking the best in every one. The 8% are scum. :emoticon-0110-tongu

Why should homosexual people have to come out and tell the public anyway? If they wish to tell their teammates then fair enough, that's their colleagues and close friends who they see everyday. But they owe nothing to anyone outside of that circle. If people keep carrying out these polls then surely that just puts extra pressure on any footballers who are gay to come out and tell everyone. Just leave them alone.

I think society as a whole is making real progress with homophobia and racism. Football does attract a load on inbred Jeremy Kyle idiots though, which explains the 8% there.

Having now read the rest of the thread and the posts about homophobia above this one of mine, I'd like to clarify the "I'm still doing it with Deano" remark....

... nah, bollocks. I don't care if you think I am or not!

To help stop homophobic chanting on the terraces for one. And it certainly happens, even at Saints - every time we play Brighton for a start. I'm straight, but imagine how gay players & supporters must feel. Like it or not, footballers are role models & if your club's top scorer came out as gay, it'd stop the word being used as an epithet in the playground: "That's gay" wouldn't be a bad thing anymore & even kids who don't watch football, but are gay, could be helped a lot if top players ever came out as gay.

Yeah I completely understand all that. But there is still absolutely no obligation on any individual to share their private life with the public, just because a few morons were brought up by **** parents.

I used to go home whenever it was announced Jermaine Wright was in the starting XI. Nothing to do with his sexuality, he was just crap.

It's disgusting that people are still Jermaine-ophobic in this day and age.

Oh, of course no obligation, but creating an atmosphere where gay players feel as comfortable to be seen in public with their boyfriends and allow them to marry, too; just like straight players get photoed with "wags" all the time is the aim. At the moment they're forced to actively hide their sexuality, not just "not tell anyone".
