but it's the programme that determines how much depth he can get into. have you listened to the infinite monkey cage? that's more in-depth, even if essentially targeted at a comedy audience.

I don't believe we have actually 'seen' these gravitational waves. They happened many moons (forgive the pun) ago but we have 'heard' them. Bengals can correct me on this.
Gravitational pull and magnetic forces are things that we have yet to harness. We continue to try. Area 51 and all that.
I watched the Scientists on TV, waxing lyrical on this discovery, and I swear the main speaker appeared to have creamed his pants on hearing the news.
What benefit this is going to be for mankind remains to be seen but I have heard on good authority that the Aboriginal People living in the remote areas of the Northern Territory here in Australia (in absolute squalor) did not interrupt their 'Rain Dance' ritual on hearing the news.

Some of his stuff is ok and well done. Like a lot of things now he sometimes falls into some pointless drawn out visual example which explains nothing other than offering something that's supposed to spectacular (like swimming with a shark or something). Normally he doesn't get bogged down into the too much detail which is the right way for his programs. There are others though who can do it as well, such as Jim Al-Khalili.

His Infinite Monkey Cage on the radio is not at the same level, I found it smug and full of in-jokes among a close coterie of friends.

Jim Al-Khalili does some great stuff on the life scientific programme, and I've found his books a really good read.

Yes and no, kinda. Electronic transducers convert 'whatever these signals are' to oscillations you can see on a screen AND to beeps you can hear through a speaker. Just like any other 'noise'.
