He needs regular football to aid his development. Saints have done exactly the right thing.

He's needed that the last 3 seasons, why only have we sent him now?

Maybe but its good that hes gone he will improve with games and a new keeper will freshen things up. I would like to think Dave Watson will have some input on who we bring in, if it is to be McCarthy then i would imagine Watson would have seen him or worked with him before.

I think the club genuienly rate Gazzanigga and remember hes only 24 , a good season at Rayo may give him the confidence to step up for us.

That's a fair point, my guess would be that Dave Watson wanted to work with him personally.* Plus we had Forster injured for a chunk of last season.

*The club has changed it's tune in recent times, but Les Reed was initially reluctant to send players on loan with the reason that you train more at a club than you play. So as great as playing competitively is, that experience can be detrimental if you're being taught crap the rest of the week.

Hmm I agree, to be honest I just want all this talking to stop and the season to start! I hate this waiting.

More game time out on loan, which is what he needs at this stage of his career.

All the Reading fans I know were gutted to lose McCarthy. He has made a few gaffes, but he is a genuinely good keeper. Hope the rumours are true.
I also hope Gazza learns a lot. Good move all round!

If you remember, Les Reed was against loaning, a few years back. He's since changed his tune, but only favours it with the right club. So Saints have been picking up club partners to send players to, knowing they will get impressive tutelage and far more football. It's a sensible move.

A few quotes from Les about it

“Rayo Vallecano is a progressive club, who are making a serious challenge to return to La Liga this coming season. Playing in Spain will also be valuable to Paulo in years to come when we hope he will be involved in regular European football."

"We also hope this will be the start of an ongoing relationship with the club and maybe we will see some of our budding outfield players getting a taste of the continent in years to come."

Well I was just told that two Spanish players are having medicals today. Not by anyone ITK, just a mate. But he got it from the net somewhere. Probably bollocks. But I should have read that bollocks here first. We're slacking guys.

Yeah, I once got a post deleted from the old 606 Pompey board. PFC were rumoured to be interested in a player who was from the "lower leagues" who could do a job for them by the name of Rajidae.
Someone must have complained. Don't shoot the messenger!<laugh>

Just in case, six Guatemalan talents are currently administering medicals to eight Indonesian starlets. We're signing between 0 and 14 of them, some time between now and 2026.

I like the idea of pushing our younger players out on continental loans rather than clogging around at some L1 club. Will do them the world of good on any number of levels.

I agree. Widens our choice of suitable teams as there can only be a few L1 teams that would suit us. And a spot of living abroad will provide valuable life experiences for young lads....chance to learn a foreign language (though not in Gazza's case). Also feels less like some kind of punishment and more like an ongoing part of your development. Part of SKD's job is to be a liaison officer for lads on loan, so he may fancy the odd trip abroad as well. :)

I'm a RCD Mallorca season ticket holder and watch most away games on telly and follow the scores and highlights of other teams.
I'll keep an eye on Gazza. :emoticon-0105-wink:
