I feel all nostalgic reading that report Waggy as ever the terror and Houghton's (and in later years Billy Bremner's) defence splitting passes were a sight to behold, along with Mac and his mighty kick.
I agree very nostalgic reading, i also think in Chillo & Waggy we had the perfect striking partnership to take advantage of the above.
Here's more on the same game, Saturday 27th August 1966. sadly I seem to be missing the back page continuation
I left the UK in 1966 and each year for a birthday present my mum bought me a subscription for weekly delivery of the Green Sports Mail, which continued for around 25 years or so until it ceased production. Generally received them in South Africa and Aus about 10 days after the Saturday issue and read every article printed in them. Remember 'Three Crowns',(City) ' Kingstonian,' (Hull FC) and 'Ranger' (Rovers) being the reporters who covered the matches. It was a link to Hull that I really treasured and I have a couple filed away to remind me of that period.
It's times like this, seeing all the clippings & photos Malcolm has been posting about his dad, when I really regret not having kept a few copies of the Sports Mail myself. I enquired at the HDM on one of my trips back home, about 20 years ago I think, whether or not they had an archive of back copies that I could go and browse through. Unfortunately they told me they had tossed them out, I think they said when they relocated to new office premises. Digital storage clearly wasn't available in those days. Big shame.
September 10th 1966 I was just wondering if any of those young lads in the picture are posting on here today? ...
Malcolm; I'm sure you appreciate that by posting these things you're safe-guarding part of the club's history which would otherwise be eventually lost. The internet allows us to maintain a record and that's what this thread is intended for. Let's hope others follow your example and share some of the history they have tucked away.
This is an article from 4th September 1966. I love the journalists enthusiasm and the way he sweeps past the fact my old man let 4 in the day before !
My Dad passed away 15 years ago today. He took me to my first game at BP when I was 7 years old. We lost 2 - 0 to Plymouth Argyle - it was 1968. Next game I went to we were in the "Well" of the West Stand for "the" 6th Round FA Cup tie against Stoke in 1971. I just remember my Dad making sure me and my sister could get to the front and see the game. Then I went with him to the 3-1 victory over Sunderland in the 73/74 season and we never missed a home game for the next 17 seasons before various reasons meant we couldn't get to every game.. I guess there are plenty of reports on the latter two - wonder if anyone has a report on the first? Anyhow Dad you'll never be forgotten and the many happy memories you gave me from BP will always be with me.
I just checked the old fixtures and I'm thinking it would've been Saturday the 16th of March 1968. I have some clippings from that season, I'll see if I've any for that game, though to be honest I doubt it ....
The only time I watched from the Well was in March 1966, normally I was in the South stand) we beat Giillingham 1-0, scored in the first minute or two, and expected a rout, and it stayed 1-0 for the whole game.
Remember that game well John. It was a Wednesday night match. I was living in Leeds at the time & my mate & I hitched to Hull & back for it. It was thick fog en route to Hull, but the k.o. was delayed 15 mins or half an hour to see if the fog at the ground would thin out. Was in the N. stand, under the clock. We could hardly see to the half way line. Waggy took a shot about 10 yards or so just inside the Gillingham half, their goalie saw it too late because of the poor visibility...game over ! Hitching back the fog got worse so we had a hell of a time finding anyone to stop for us. A lorry ended up dropping us somewhere near Bawtry (I think it was) around midnight. Nowt on the roads ! We walked a bit until we found a garage, where luckily a coach was parked in the forecourt. It was open so we kipped in it for a few hours to keep warm. Ended up back in Leeds around half past 7 the next morning. Unforgettable game. I also remember we lost at home 4-1 to York City, who ended up bottom at the end of the season, but it was our history making season as we ended top of the heap. Plus England won the World Cup. What a year.
Wow that was some journey back to Leeds. I seems to remember that night Gillingham were in royal blue shirts with a white diagonal strap across the front, and I remember thinking I had never sheen a shirt like that before. Also in 1966 was the game at Stamford Bridge, when we were 2 nil down in the 6th round of the cup, and finish 2-2 with 2 goals from Waggy. That is still one of my best away days ever.
