The Club is delighted to announce the signing of Tomas Kalas on a season long loan deal from Chelsea.

"A centre-back who can also operate on the right, Kalas spent the previous 18 months on loan with Middlesbrough, playing 47 times as they reached the Championship Play-Off Final in 2014/15, before winning promotion as runners-up behind Burnley last season.

The 23-year-old began his career at his hometown club Sigma Olomouc, joining Chelsea for a reported £5.2m in the summer of 2010. After two seasons on loan at Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem, during which time he was named Czech Republic Young Player of the Year, he made his debut for his parent club in a 2-0 League Cup win at Arsenal in October 2013. His Premier League debut and first start for Chelsea came at Anfield later that season, with Kalas impressing at the heart of defence as the Blues won 2-0. Ahead of the 2014/15 season he moved on loan to FC Cologne in Germany, but he joined Boro in a similar deal midway through the campaign.

Having represented the Czech Republic at every youth level from Under-17 to Under-21, Kalas also has a number of caps for the senior side, making his debut in November 2012 against local rivals Slovakia."

Presumably to replace Nando who as noted in the "Out" thread is on his way.

I'm very happy with this solid defender who has played last two seasons in the Championship for Boro. Does anyone know if he is quick as we are missing a bit of pace at centre half. Definately an upgrade on Nando who is on his way out. Now we just need to defend better previous seasons

    Odoi Madl Kalas Malone

Maybe Odoi left back and Fredericks ar right back

Very happy with this signing. Madl and Kalas would be a worryingly small centre back partnership.

He appears to be quick at reading the game Cookie, if this clip is anything to go by:

And of course at 'Boro he played in the side that had the best defensive record in the Championship last season. They apparently wanted him back (permanently if possible) and on social media the 'Boro fans are a 'bit upset' he's coming to us. We both could be wrong about him playing at CB though!? - despite Nando going!

One of the 'Boro fans who rated him said:

"he mainly played RB for us but just as comfortable at CB. A genuine versatile player who oozes class, top signing"

New signing Tomas Kalas reveals that Fulham's desire to bring him in convinced him it was the correct move, and sees no reason why they can't fight for promotion from the Championship in 2016/17.

By my count, Kalas has appeared in 17 games and missed 8 this season. We've conceded 30 this season: with Kalas on the pitch we've conceded 14 goals (we conceded two against Derby after he went off injured) and without him we've conceded 16. In summary, we've conceded more goals without Kalas than with him, in half the amount of match time.

To me that rather underlines how important Kalas has been to us this season!

EDIT: Additional fact - we've had 7 clean sheets with Kalas starting and only 1 without him (where, strangely, Ipswich also had no shots on target).

I really like Kalas. Is there a chance of a permanent Signing?

I've maybe, just a tad, elevated Surly to a position that even he, being the modest soul that he is, would be surprised to find himself!
