I'm not sure what you are expecting a deep lying midfielder to do. He was constantly available, he moved the ball on efficiently and rarely gave it away, he played a lot more forward passes than Clucas who was phoning it in for large parts of the match. He didn't have lots of shots or numerous crash tackles - but that's not what he is in there for. Anyway, no chat on the MOTM thread please
Deep lying midfielder. Role - break up opposition attacks and pass to a team mate. He can pass, but he can't tackle. That's the problem.
Hector Campbell Can't really pick a third but I'll go Meyler. I thought Larsson was steady when he came on. Calm on the ball, seemed to make the right pass and offered Aina a bit more protection. I'd think about playing Clucas on the left wing to offer something similar.
Ha ha, I'm OK mate thanks. Just couldn't think of anyone else who I thought deserved my vote - a bit stingy I know but didn't want to add a name just for the sake of it.
Hector Aina Meyler We had no steel or creativity in the middle, poor service to our front men, who were beavering away on crumbs. Henriksen ducked on his late closing down effort on their first goal. He left Aina with two men to mark on their second goal. Aina was our most effective player probing when on the attack, but had little support from the others, although Larsson improved things late on. Bowen had a few decent moments, but Clucas and Henriksen were largely anonymous. Grosicki seems one dimensional- pace, but loses control of the ball in decent positions. Meyler did inject some thrust & enthusiasm, but it was too little, too late. Hector, despite a couple or so overhit passes tried to inject some creativity from the back and as usual was very solid in his defensive duties. Wolves, with all their spending, were not a million miles ahead of us - in fact I thought it was a pretty evenly fought battle. Disappointing result- depth is needed without doubt.
Interesting that Meyler took the penalty. That's because he has a good finish. For me he's first on the team sheet. Yes some passes go astray, but the will to win, the effort. Captain for me.
