Bring back Les Kellett, Johnny Kwango and the Royal Brothers. Ah the good old days watching wrestling after the racing had finished and City were away (I was too young to be allowed to away matches). Used to go watch it across the street with a friendly old man to keep him company, he always had a bottle of Dandelion and Burdock so that was an added bonus.
I regularly used to have to go and stay with my grandparents on Greatfield at weekends, we were never allowed to speak when either the wrestling or the pools were on. I didn't mind that, but tasteless mince and stewed apple every ****ing week got a bit tedious.
I had to stay with me Grandma, Fridays, an' had to maintain silence during Crossroads and To Catch A Thief. Her mince was great mind, but not as good as her beef stew. Some Fridays I had to go to Darby and Joan with her however. Being the only seven year old at a beetle drive pitted against 70 year old blue rinse war widows is an experience that will either break ya' or make ya'. I'm a broken man.
I saw some of these at madeley street baths when they wrestled there it was quite good back then Dickie Davies used to do the world of sport programme and they always had an hour of wrestling on it.
No I was a kid back then but my dad was a trawler man and every time he came home from sea he would take us to the Lord Charles Pub were he would then run to the little bookmakers next door it was a small place in the pub car park lol, think it might have been a Habershaws.
I assume it's still there, they updated their Facebook page in Nov 2016 and they don't seem to post on there very regularly.
Ye think it was habbershaws. What ever happened to them... Lord Charles used to be busy as... I went in a few times on a Sunday dinner it was like a Saturday night in cheese. Rammed.
It was always packed on a sunday and the family room, old man used to get pissed then when it shut at 3pm go home have dinner go to sleep and back there at 6 when it opened lol.
It was a big pub but it was near derelict when I last went in early 2000's. Druggies all over the place and it's right on the edge of nowhere. I'm amazed it's still going.
We used to go to our grandma's every Saturday for our dinner. We were always told we were eating chicken but 4 of us all managed to get a leg each. Turned out we were eating the cast of Watership Down. Happy days watching World of Sport with great uncle Clarrie down Folkstone Street.
