    Sully

Terrific film about the man that landed a passenger jet on the Hudson river saving everybody on his flight.

As true story's go this is a corker. Hanks is excellent and the fellow he plays is a hero in all sorts of ways.

Oscar winning material for Mr Hanks.

    hateful eight. 8.5/10

enjoyed this a lot. typical Tarantino film with lots of swearing and n words. Jenifer Jason Leigh plats a great part and gets the **** kicked out of her all film. Sam Jackson is his usual cool self and its always good to see Bruce Dern in a film. class actor. speaking of which Kurt Russell stars in the film and he is always watchable. a long film with some stunning location photography.

    The Accountant

Very good thriller starring Ben Afleck as an autistic accountant come mega hitman. Afleck is great, the plot, not so much. Mind you they do explain how it all comes to pass in the form of flashbacks to his childhood .

Plenty of action and Anna Kendrick supplies the light relief. There is also an excellent supporting cast including J K Simmons, John Lithgow and John Bernthal

    Supersonic

The story of Oasis. From it's formation to playing to half a million people five years later over two days at Knebworth this film gives it to you straight.

Say what you like about the brothers Gallagher they are very entertaining. They can also be very funny. This film has loads of excellent footage of their early gigs including that of the fateful night they played King tuts and were snapped up by Alan McGee.

Sometimes poignant, sometimes hilarious it has a constant narration from both brothers and the rest of the band members, road crew and management. It also has an excellent score, assuming you don't mind Oasis tunes.

Pretty much as good as it gets biopic wise.

Dr.Strange and now i am most welcoming towards 3D,i had never been previously,a modest Imax screen with 3D in the bloody front rows and the experience was surreal, trippy and hypnotic...they did some serious vfx with this one.

    Arrival 7/10

Heard lots of good things about this film. Compared emotionally to the likes of Lost in Translation. Perhaps that's why I was expecting more. It's a reasonably good enough film. There's a nice little "awakening" (or twist) that suddenly dawns on you towards the end. But it's not enough to make this a great film.

Amy Adams is a quality actress and she does her usual flawless performance (even if it seems she could play the part in her sleep), it certainly doesn't compare to her best in American Hustle.

I was in a dilemma to either watch this Adams film or her other one out now, Nocturnal Animals. That's now next on my list.

Caught a few movies over the holidays...

    Passengers

Sci-fi love story set on a space ship on a 120 year journey to a far off world.

When the ship collides with a big space boulder Chris Pratt is unlucky enough out of 5000 passengers and crew to be the only one woken up out of suspended animation. 90 years too early. Finding things a wee bit boring despite having the excellent Micheal Sheen, an android bartender for company he decides to wake up fellow passenger Jennifer Lawrence.

    Well why wouldn't you?

Pratt and Lawrence do a fine job but Sheen steals every scene he's in. Lawrence Fishbourne puts in a brief appearance too. The CGI is excellent a lot better than the plot to be honest. Pure popcorn, one to watch with the missus.

    7/10

    Dr Strange

Super hero movies don't get much better than this. Ticks every box and the full cast are brilliant in it

    9/10

    Assassins Creed

Pretty formulaic action movie starring Michael Fassbender. Looks like Michael has landed himself another money spinning role in a mega franchise. Expect many many more Creeds.

    6/10

    Nocturnal animals.

Very good thriller, a story within a story.

Amy Adams and Jake Gyllanhaal are great in this but the ever excellent Micheal Shannon is the stand out. Very good all round.

    8/10

Fantastic beasts and where to find them.

Potter world popcorn starring Eddie Redmayne. It's all right i suppose. Great special effects. If you liked Harry you will like this.

    7/10

    Rouge one a starwars story.

Might be the best Star wars movie made, so far. Excellent adventure/sci fi movie.

    8/10

    Spectral

Netflix movie that is actually quite good if you ignore the massive holes in the plot.

    6/10

    Fences

Probably the best film you will see this year. Bold statement for January i know but you will do well to see better performances of that of Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in this movie. The script is brilliant and is delivered impeccably. The supporting cast is also top notch. A must see.

    9.5/10

watched a couple of films over the weekend:

    AMADEUS

30+ year old film I've never seen before. tells the (fictional) story of Mozart. Tom Hulse plays him as a total giggling imbecile and is totally better for it. F Murray Abraham is the Protagonist as Salieri who sees Mozart as the genius he is but hates him for showing how mediocre his own music is. the part where Salieri's welcome tune is played by Mozart after only one hearing then is improved as he plays it in front of the king and shows Salieri up is great. I saw the directors cut which is 3 hours long and, to be fair, it did drag a bit. the music is great but its not a film for everyone.

    7.5/10

    keeping up with the Joneses

A comedy without too many big laughs. Zac Galifankis, Jon Hamm. Gal Gadot and the wonderful Isla Fisher play the starring parts in the story of a suburban couple who have new neighbours who act very suspicious. the scene where Gadot confronts Fisher after been followed by her is good as is the part in the snake restaurant. but the story goes along as you think it will.

if you got 90 minutes to kill you could do worse

I'm just finishing off my home Cinema set up, 100" screen and 5.1 surround, it's rough but I can live wi it, I plan to watch a LOT of movies soon.

btw did you hear they may be filming some of the new Avengers movies in Scotland? Glasgow, Edinburgh and the highlands. Yes. Hopefully more WWZ type sets on the streets of Glasgow.

Les Intouchables: Really good froggy film with subtitles.

Some Will Smith film where he tried to change peeps' lives because his wife died or some pish like that, fell asleep.

Avatar: Had never seen it and it was much better than I expected, still went on for way too ****ing long.

Saw Patterson at the cinema before xmas, worst film I've ever seen.

Looking forward to Rogue One, still not been bothered to go watch it yet.

Tale of Tales. Off the scale wierd but beautifully captured trio of grim fairy tales, a bit like Guillermo del Toro meets Peter Greenaway. 7/10

    Kung Fu Hustle.
Not watched this for years, actually forgot how good it was. If you've never seen it do yourself a favour and catch it on Netflix. 9/10

    Hacksaw ridge.

Incredible true story brought to life by Mel Gibson. Andrew Garfield does a fine job playing the lead, Desmond T Doss a man who braved the horror of America's war in the Pacific without carrying a gun and never firing a shot. He also managed to save the lifes of 75 men on a ridge on Okinawa for which he recieved his country's highest award for bravery.

This is a very good film. Gibson does great job especially with the battle scenes. Garfield and Hugo Weaving, playing Doss's father are pretty good and the script and plot are sound. Actually if it wasn't for the fact that the film is based on actual events then you would probably find it a bit far fetched and smaltzy. That's how incredible Doss's bravery was.

    8/10.

    You can also check out...

    Desmond Doss, the consciousness objector.

A documentary that was made about Doss in 2004 and you will find on YouTube.
