Match Day Thread versus Stevenage

Notdistant only goes for the big matches.............

Anyway, before we think about the replay with Liverpool we have the matter of a bread and butter league match which frankly has more real importance than the "big one". I actually think a lot of people have lost sight of our season long aims due to the FA Cup. This Saturday we face Stevenage who haven't been in bad form of late.

Stevenage on the form side have much the same form as Argyle over the last 5 matches. Possibly our opposition has been a fraction stronger but not by a lot. We are going to have a squad of players who once more will have one eye on the match next Wednesday and will be facing a team of no small ability in Stevenage. This is going to be a hard match in my opinion and one we could do with winning to keep the pressure on the others in the league around us. Losing in the league unfortunately becomes a habit and it's one we do not want to get into. We have a few injuries once more but I still think we have enough about this squad to keep the momentum up and take this result. As always one would ask what could possibly go wrong...............

 

an easy win here if they all concentrate on this one not the big one. it will be difficult for them but they need to win as promotion is a must. the cup and money is a great bonus.. will the new lads start this one??

We had some uncertainty during November and December as my father-in-law has twice had a hip replacement cancelled at the last minute (once when he was already at the hospital having risen at 5:30 to be at the hospital at 7:00) due to lack of hospital beds.

I'll probably go for Exeter on the 11 Feb rather than Blackpool on the 28 Jan otherwise there would be one more, if that doesn't count as glory hunting, but inevitably I'll be buying tickets for cash again before the season ends.

Considering I don't go to Tuesday games in school term times and have 2 females to consider, I think that's respectable.

 

I think Sensible meant that you only put a write up on the big matches or that is the way i read it..

I think you go to plenty of games ,, a lot more than me as i cant get there at times.. i have been and had a call to say there was a problem with my lad so had to come away.. That has happened at the theatre and various places. But wont give up.. i had a season ticket for over 10 years prior to his birth..

He's a bit bleddy touchy ain't he Joe. You are correct and I meant no more than posting threads. Mind you my revenge for job stealing is he had to sit there and type all that out. Nobody who ever attends Argyle has ever got to justify themselves to me. I spent most of 14 years away from Plymouth and going to Argyle in my younger days. HM Government and the drafting section saw to that. There was no need to be offended notdistant but if I did offend then I appologise. Now stop pinching my job.

 

Well done, he just read it wrong as he had a long day sat at Argyle for 7 hours, bad enough for 90 minutes

 

No doubt the kick off will be delayed at some point on Saturday so I'll let you know if more than 100 minutes is too long. That's allowing normal entry into ground with 5 minutes to spare before kick off and 5 minutes extra time at the end. Another bleddy delay for these people who can't sort out tickets will delay my pint. Bleddy part time attendees.................

You wait till next Wednesday I bet they only have half the gates open.

 

ok, yep i suspect there will be a delay. Yep and half the roads are open in Plymouth.. what a mess this city is in.. be glad when i move to Torquay... You cant get around the city, delay on all roads then a few bombs that were dead and they close the road near my home.. twice in 3 days.. its chaos.. hope they sort out the lanes at outland road Wednesday it will be hell.

Anyway, I've lived in Plymouth since 86 and had a season ticket for most of those years (even when absent working for HM the Queen) but according to some I cant be a proper fan as I wasn't born within the sound of the dockyard siren. Bit of a pointless comment because I couldn't care less who else has, or has not managed to get a ticket. Mine arrived in the post yesterday so all sorted.
Looking forward to a 'normal' match tomorrow in front of 8500ish-no stress (other than watching whats happening on the pitch) no scramble for seats, and no need to shout 'sit down'-or at least there shouldn't be.
Hope the team are focused and if so should be a fairly comfortable 2-0.

I don't do this must be born thing or who is a better supporter than somebody else. Everyone is different and has different circumstances. The only thing my season ticket entitles me to, and quite rightly so, is some perks over others. My son wasn't born in the City let alone within the sound of the Dockyard siren. Due mainly to my service of course. He has been taken to Argyle since he was about 6 years old. He missed matches when he was young due to having a stupid kids league that couldn't sort it's games out not to coincide with the professional league, He missed another section of games when he was away at Uni. Apart from that I've made him go throughout. He's as good as a Janner though. He grumbles about Argyle quite often as a lot of them do. If I couldn't have afforded to go to Argyle and take him then I would not have put myself in debt to do it. They would just be 2 short now. The only people I object to are the plastics who support a premiership club with no affiliation to it at all and ignore their home town club until a game like this comes up. As long as all the people who follow Argyle have a ticket though I have no objection to the plastics handing over some cash for a change.

As I said in the opening post. I just hope they concentrate on this one because Stevenage are not a duff side recently.

 

Well a thoroughly enjoyable game saw Argyle come away with the points. 4-2 suggests that it was easier than it was, but with a bit better finishing and had the post not been in the way it could also easily have been 7 or 8.

Argyle started poorly or Stevenage started well, and we had hardly had a touch when we were one down. A bit of non-defending and a ricochet off the back of someone's legs and the ball was in the net. At least there was plenty of time to recover; and recover we did. Argyle gradually grew in confidence a played some good stuff especially down the flanks, although there was a bit too much route one stuff for a while. It seemed only a matter of time before we would equalise and an equally scruffy move bounced off Slew and it was one -one. Another flowing move, brilliantly finished by Jervis made it 2-1 and we all looked forward to half time. Unfortunately a Luke blooper when he seemed to dive over an average free kick meant the sides went in all square.

Still, there was hope, and Argyle very quickly made it 3-2 and completely dominated for a 25 min period; Carey, Jervis, Garita and Slew threatened everytime they broke forward, able assisted by the excellent Smith. The game really have should been put to bed long before Stevenage were thwarted by Luke in their attempt to even things up. The ball rebounded off the bar and Luke pulled off a magnificent point blank save to go from zero to hero.

Goodwilly and debutante Blissett replaced Garita and Jervis but due to the continued tactic of pumping high balls in, Goodwilly didn't get much of a look in. But, at last, he became 'Johnny on the spot' following another good move and smashed the ball home from a few yards. Job done. Smith picked up what looks like a bad injury in the move leading to the final goal meaning Argyle finished with 10.

Smith was my MOTM bit also good shifts from Carey, Jervis, Garita , Slew, Purrington, Bradley, in fact pretty much everyone in green.

A really open and entertaining game which should be a morale boost ahead of the midweek game in the cup.

 

I totally agree this was an entertaining game lyndie. I didn't think I was going to be that entertained at the start. It looked like it might be one of those days when we let one in and it was an awful goal to conceed. When you think about the defending this team did against Liverpool and how long they did it for, the goal today looked even worse. But we pulled it back and even went in front with what I thought was some decent play. I did think that Stevenage hadn't come just to make up numbers and was reasonably impressed with their movement and passing game. They did seem to find space and a lot of their passes found their own player. We on the other hand did sort of hoof it at the start. Poor old Luke did have a mare with their second. All he had to do was catch it but somehow managed to let it through his hands. A terrible goal. I still thought 2 - 2 was a reasonably fair result at halftime.

Second half and I thought we did a lot better even if we didn't start the half that well. The difference today from the last couple of games was some of the players that have been missing, Carey being the bigest example, but today they all seemed to want to play and have a go. The danger being the Liverpool game being in their thoughts as we have all said. Loads of effort especially in the second half and I hope that was through Adams putting a bomb up their respective arses. Jarvis did very well today as did Smith and Carey. Bradley and Songo'o also along with Threkald. Infact most of them didn't do much wrong overall. Not sure who my MOM would be to be honest. I was so pleased to see Goodwillie score. I think he needed something to go for him. When he came on the Argyle side didn't change their way of play and I thought here we go again. Adams must know by now that you cannot lump the ball up front if he is the lone striker. That is what they did once more and Goodwillie looked a lost soul. However, when they stopped doing it he looked a different player. I like him but if you are going to play him then you have to play to his strengths. You need a little and large and I think he would do well. I liked our new giant striker. He didn't do much in the time he had but he did show he cared. He's like a gazelle bounding about and I think Adams must have said get on and don't stop running. He didn't. Anyway, great result and much needed. Once again proves the point that this side can grind it out when they have to and don't ever look beaten.

One bit for the Ref. I thought he was mostly ok today but a few of his decisions and non decisions were strange to say the least. Was it just me not noticing or did he let every single push and shove go in the first half and then suddendly start noticing them halfway through the second. He pulled Argyle up twice in a few minutes for what looked nothing more than he had ignored for an hour. In the first half he penalised Argyle for a foul when the Stevenage player slid into a challenge on the floor and lost the ball. Nobody touched him and it was plain to see. Strange.

 

That was an important win yesterday against Stevenage......sandwiched in between the two Liverpool games...it would have been easy to have tripped up as minds could of been elsewhere.

Disappointing that we picked up another injury with Smith playing well at the time...looks like he will miss Wednesdays game.....we also have another problem with Tanner's and Garita's loan spells ending on Monday.....Tanner will surely be allowed to stay....Reading are doing well without him.....maybe Adams might get the chance to buy him or just take over his contract....whatever they do in these circumstances. Garita might not be so easy....it will be noted that he scored yesterday although a bit lucky...deflecting a Carey goal bound shot in....Bristol City are getting sucked into a relegation battle and might be tempted to bring him back....although it will be quite a jump for him to play Championship level football....lets hope he is allowed to stay.

Good to see Sawyer fit enough for the subs bench.....and a plus in Goodwillie scoring his first goal in the league....it might open the flood gates for him...he can score he has proven that elsewhere.He is wasted up front and surely needs to feed off a big target man.....good to see Blissett get a short cameo appearance...he could be a good Adams buy.

 

Garita credited with the goal but have you seen it on the Football on 5 show plym? On the day Carey was well pee'd off and acted with disbelief when Garita got the credit. Don't think he's good enough for the Championship either. Tanner is the one I want to stay out of the two. We have also been saying that about Goodwillie for months now. Maybe Adams might listen now.

 

Did see the video.....but without seeing it on slow motion hard to tell what was what.....reminds me about the penalty he missed....Carey would have taken that if Garita hadn't muscled in.....that's 2 goals he has taken from Carey.....maybe Garita should go back to B C.

 

Garita knew nothing about it. Carey whacked it and it was absolutely goal bound. It just skimmed off Garita into the net so of course because he "got a touch" he got the credit. Carey's reaction was priceless.

 

Oh Plym now what would i do with him...dress him up as a Bear of course..

 

Very droll BC.......It didn't cross my mind that anyone mistake Bristol City for AWAY IN BC.....

 

At the moment, retaining Threlkeld is more important I think. He's playing well and we are short of full backs.

Tanner is being badgered about staying by Argyle fans on Twitter, where he's very active. He hasn't commented on it but he's certainly very well aware he's wanted.

Of course, ideally they'll both stay permanently.........
