How these historic Hull city centre landmarks could be reborn...

    What is happening and where?

    South Blockhouse
Developing the idea of creating of a new visitor attraction as a "stepping stone" between The Deep and the Old Town by exploring the potential of re-telling the story of Hull's Tudor fortress.

    MAKEOVER: The King Billy statue

The gilded equestrian statue of King Billy was erected in 1734 but is starting to look in need of a new coat of gold leaf paint.

A structural survey will assess the condition of the landmark and set out what repairs are necessary.

    King's Buildings

A condition survey will help provide information ahead of a future planning application being drawn up to allow the upper floors of the South Church Side landmark being brought back into use.

    River Hull

Funding will see more survey work being carried out at three disused dry docks in Dock Office Row to help facilitate the eventual berthing of the Arctic Corsair in one of them.

There will also be an audit of historic paving materials, crane tracks and surviving dockside equipment in the area.

A condition survey will also be carried out on the disused Grade II listed building which is currently up for sale.

    Guildhall
Further research work to support of Heritage Lottery bid to reinstate a working time-ball feature on the building's main clock tower.

    Exchange Buildings
New research is planned to update details of the official listing of the property in Lowgate which was once a Victorian trading centre.

The cause of recurring problems with saturated stonework around the main entrance will also be investigated.

Is it definitely going to be 5 star? The Double Tree by Hilton in Leeds isn't.

I think they've got it wrong, it should probably say Hull's first 4 star hotel.

I see they're now not taking bookings until Jan 2018.

Yeah I'm 99% sure it's wrong, for there to be a 5 star hotel in Hull city centre would be monster news.

I remember being at a tourism event where it was discussed that Hull city centre not having a even a 4 star hotel was seen as a massive negative and someone fumed arguing with officials until he was blue in the face that the Royal was a 4 star <doh>

Hull's Royal Hotel looks to create 44 new bedrooms thanks to Hull 2017 demand

PROPOSAL: The Royal Hotel wants to create more bedrooms.

A historic city centre hotel is looking to expand by creating dozens of new bedrooms.

The Mail recently reported that Hull's Mercure Royal has been taken over by Cheshire-based Britannia Hotels. The hotel, which is connected with Paragon Station and has been part of the city's landscape since 1849, currently has 155 rooms and has a three-star rating.

The new owners have now applied for planning permission to create a further 44 bedrooms due to Hull's popularity since the beginning of the City of Culture year.

A report into the plans said: "The proposal seeks to alter unused and inefficiently used modern office space within the interior of the Royal Station Hotel, Hull, to create an additional 44 guest bedrooms.

"The proposed interior alterations to the hotel building are to areas that have been refurbished in modern times and converted to modern office space, which are currently either not used by the hotel or not used as efficiently as they could be.

"Some of the space is leased to third parties, however the use of the space would be far more efficient if it were converted to hotel rooms and allow the hotel to operate at a higher capacity."

The hotel is currently grade two listed and no proposals have been made to alter the its exterior or to any interior features with any heritage significance. The current interior was rebuilt in 1992 after a fire in 1990 gutted the building.

The owners have said they are "responding to a market demand".

They said: "Hull is the UK City of Culture 2017. These events characteristically attract additional visitors to the subject city not only in the designated year of culture, but for years afterwards.

"Britannia is responding to a market demand for additional rooms. In addressing market demand for these rooms, the addition of the proposed rooms would potentially serve to stimulate the hospitality economy in Hull and provide employment opportunities for local people not only for the duration of the proposed works but in all departments of the hotel, once the rooms become operational."

The hotel, which saw Queen Victoria stay in 1853 and a Royal throne created on the first floor, are also seeking to provide further bedrooms for guests due to a station revamp.

"The station will once again be given a revamp ahead of Hull's City of Culture year in 2017, with a £1.4 million investment providing a new waiting area and more retail units amongst other general improvements," the proposal goes on to state.

"The additional rooms are much in demand and will add to and enhance the inventory of room choice and availability during the city's high profile year as cultural capital and beyond.

"Aside from this the additional rooms will serve to stimulate the economy in Hull by employing local people during the construction phase and employing additional maintenance, housekeeping and other staff locally upon project completion."

P&O ferries Pride of York has uindergone a major refurbishment and is relaunched in Hull this week

Two of Hull's super ferries are to be relaunched this week following a a multi-million pound refit.

P&O Ferries will celebrate the relaunch of the freshly refurbished Pride of York on Wednesday at King George Dock in Hull.

The 32,000 ton vessel, which can carry nearly 900 passengers on its travels between Britain and Europe, has had its freight facilities, shops, catering experience and bedrooms completely overhauled, and its bars will now have hotspot wi-fi.

Next week, the ship's sister vessel, The Pride of Bruges will be relaunched in Zebrugge, after receiving a similar refurbishment.

Janette Bell, managing director at P&O Ferries, said: "We are delighted that this £8.5m relaunch has transformed freight driver facilities, on-board shops, Brasserie and improved the cabins for everyone who sails with us."

"Imagine stepping on board a ship which takes you to the continent in comfort and importantly provides you with a good night's sleep, whilst giving you time to relax over a meal and take advantage of some great shopping deals. It is the ideal package for tourists who don't want to endure a budget airline and for freight drivers who want to relax overnight and reach their destination on time in the morning.

"On board our upgraded Brasserie offers new menus offering value for money British and continental dishes. The bars have been given a sleek. modern feel offering hot food to order and hotspot wi-fi.

"We are proud that whether you are a tourist passenger or a freight driver you will be able to sleep soundly in your cabin and arrive refreshed the next day."

P&O has said the investment is an indication of its commitment to its Hull routes to Europe. The company offers fares starting from £40 each way.

Ms Bell said: "We aim to enable as many tourist customers as possible to experience and enjoy our new ships for themselves. This year, we are offering 33 mini-cruises to destinations such as Bruges, Ostend and Ypres."

The company is also pushing hard to attract new freight customers and the upgrades to the ferries include an overnight laundry service, special discounts for shops and a £1 Wi-Fi offer.

Originally built in Glasgow in 1986 as the MS Norsea, the Pride of York was refurbished and refitted in 2001 before entering service as part of our Hull to Zeebrugge fleet in 2003.

Business guests will be treated to lunch and a glass of wine, and given a guided tour of The Pride of York, at its launch event on Wednesday.

A city can manage without 5 star hotels. Leeds didn't have any which didn't stop it changing from all recognition from the 1960s onwards. Don't know if there still are many, if any, though a couple of apartment blocks as opposed to hotels which have gone up in the city centre are designated 5 star.

I didn't suggest that a 5 star hotel was needed.

There still aren't any five star hotels in Leeds, which is a surprise, you'd expect there to be at least one (Manchester has four or five).

The biggest surprise for me is that Manchester hasn't got any Michelin starred restaurants, and hasn't had one for 40 years. With all the footballers in the region this is amazing (yeah I know most live in Cheshire, but there's a lot that like to drink in swanky Manc bars.)

The Queens should be 5 star - brilliant location, amazing building - but it's a ****ing dump through years of neglect to the extent that it would now be cost ineffective to bring it up to the required standard.

Outside of London, barely any Michelin star restaurants are in cities, most of them are in the middle of nowhere.

Birmingham has 5. As those 2 cities are battling it out for '2nd city status' it's quite a big deal.

I didn't say you did. I was making an observation. Why do you treat everything as an attack on yourself? An inferiority complex?
