Transfer Rumours Comings and Goings Summer 2017

Absolutely lyndhurst. We have all had a bleat about favoured players many a time and pretty much forgotten them soon after. The only time I would be narked about a player going is if he went to a club with less potential or for the same cash as we offered. There have been rumours about Shef United and Carey for a while now. If that is true then we could not hope to match them in what's on offer.

 

I'm not suggesting overspending. There's a budget and that has to be adhered to but this idea of wage caps is a soft option. Instead, the club has to willing to say "yes, GC gets £X and we're offering you £Y because he's a better player than you". I've no evidence they aren't doing that of course, I'm just talking hypothetically.

Ultimately, if GC asks for too much then Adams has to decide when he'd rather spend the money elsewhere than on him. He hasn't done badly for us so far so I'm happy for him to make that call.

 

I think it's more a case of matching or getting anywhere near what others might offer. I doubt we would or could.


It's a bleddy miserable day here weather wise (for the absent who might not know) and it makes you want to pull the curtains, shut the door and let the day just pass you by. Trouble is there is nothing much to do or get your teeth into. The ones I've got left that is. What's going on at Argyle? It's been a cuple of weeks now since the league ended and we haven't signed anyone. What's Adams playing at for christ sake. Sort it out and give us something to moan about properly. Anyone remember all the angst flying about when we signed this one or that one the last time. Injury prone, doesn't score, xyz reject why do we want him......etc. We need a bit of that to get us going again.

 

Nice and sunny but cloudy as well here..temperature 72f....just to cheer you up sensible.

To early I think for new players....some teams still involved....some not released their stay or go lists as yet.....most contracts do not run out until the end of June.....so some will be accepting or refusing new contracts up to then.

 

It's going to be a long, long closed season Sensible. It already seems months ago since we last played. There will be plenty of time to take up and perfect a substantial new hobby. Marquetry perhaps.....

 

Mines jig-saw puzzles.....generally Jan to May each year.......I find the off-season is generally interesting....comings and goings and rumours.....and a General Election this year....which is already as dead as a Dodo...Corbyn trying his best to drag us back to the 1970's and Tim Farron not believing we will leave the EU....it must be all that cannabis he is trying to legalise. Ukip taken over by a nut called Nuttall whose voters will be voting for Theresa May and Brexit......a very strange election year indeed.

 

It is a very funny time of year in football. There is about a four week period where it is difficult to do much player wise. Some are released, others are given offers and some are already under contract. The thing is that those with offers have four weeks to make their minds up and most of them are 'on the beach'. So although the manager might be able to pick up someone who has been released (e.g. Spencer to Mansfield), it is quite difficult to do much else until we know which players are accepting their offers (or not).

 

I thought things were simpler this year......only Graham Carey and Marc McCallum have outstanding contract agreements.....if that is the case then Derek Adams has reasonable leeway to search for replacements for those he has released.....is that not so Lindy ?

 

Everything you read though suggests that plans have been laid and lists made. Last summer was the first year Adams and his team actually created their own squad and that turned out as well as we could possibly have expected. Patience is a virtue remember!

 

Yeh I know but it is a bloody awful time. I've got nothing else to do except wait for news..................if they paid me more pension I could be on the beach.

 

Yes, according to the Herald that seems to be the case , although I think Gary Sawyer is also in the same position. It is far from simple though, am sure DA has his lists of targets but it is still going to take a lot of work to end up with the same squad strength as this season and I doubt there will be any(much) positive news for another few weeks.

 

You may get a bit more pension soon if that goat gets in... you may also lose the winter allowance.. i could do with that money.. how do i apply?

 

I thought you made a living out of the Winter heating Joe. Most people who get the allowance spend it on the grandkids Christmas presents or the next years holiday deposit. I'm a bit surprised it has lasted this long anyway.

 

Yes we do a lot in the winter, but true a word you said.. they spend it on every thing but heating! Well it surprises me how much they spend on it.. so a few pound may be saved if it ever happens.

All the manifestos are a lot of rubbish and lies... Nothing will make a difference, as long as cooperation tax does not go up to much.. i may have to pay a bit more out...

 

Back to the football.

Seems like there is a bit of money being thrown around in L2 next season - Mansfield signing Spencer etc and from their published accounts they lost £2 million last year -perhaps they can afford to write this off.

In the absence of anyone to throw money at the club, do we want a club that is run in the black or would we be happy to rack up some debt to sign better players? .

The bottom line is that we cant stay in the black and afford a huge wage bill like some clubs who have a sugar daddy to fund them.
Not sure what else we can do given that I didn't win tonight's euro!

 

The lower leagues do need somehow to benefit more from the "so called" success of the Premiership.....how to filter some of that money down seems to be an unanswerable question......lower league clubs going in to the red is so dangerous....unless they have a "sugar daddy" owner.....personally I prefer the model we have at the moment.....some think it so dull to live within your means.....but we have seen how terminal it can nearly be to go in to the red....we don't need to burn our fingers twice in one decade.

If Craig Noone is becoming a free agent....and if he is reported to be on £15,000 a week.....and if that is still his going rate....then we just need to stop dreaming and move on....not for us then....not as a Div 1 club.

 

We need to run in a financially stable way Lyndhurst. No owner can write off £2m every year at League 1 or League 2 level. Running a club at that sort of deficit permanently can only lead to one outcome.

That doesn't necessarily mean a surplus every year: this next year may be one in which Argyle does have to to pay out for some transfer fees for example to make the step up to the higher league. There must be a reasonable expectation the deficit can be clawed back over the next, what, 2, 3 4 years? Getting that balance right isn't easy and you have to rely on the club experts getting the right players.

Craig Noone has played at the top of the Championship and in the PL so let's hope his £15k per week isn't what's needed to succeed in League 1, otherwise we're all doomed! A 23 man squad at that wage level probably costs about £22m p.a. inc on-costs. That's £49 per seat per per home match in an always full 20k capacity stadium! I know there are other income streams but I believe the money that comes down from the PL to each League 1 club is only £645k p.a. for example. That's, what, only, what 10% of PAFC's gate receipts at 10k bums per match?.

 

With us "modifying" ye olde grandstand soon ....our maximum seating total will be curtailed over that period.....so incomings might drop a tad.

 

There are owners who can sustain a £2m loss each season for a fair period of time but they are ones who will be funding a rise up the league. I know there is no guarantee of promotion but you can't tell me that money doesn't generally talks in football. There is no dubting that Argyle made a few quid last season. If we didn't then somebody somewhere is trying to kid the masses. I know we don't have an owner who is ever going to splash anything let alone any money. He hasn't spent anything yet so to think he ever will is just a pipe dream. So it's within our means then. But, within our means is not saving money but actually spending up to our max without going over the top. The question mark is will he go that far. He should. I don't think anyone is expecting Argyle to be paying anywhere near £15k per week. I don't think there is a need in league one either. Portsmouth might this season or near to it anyway but not us. I think it was proved last season that spending some money generates money so there is that balance to consider. Personally though I'm not expecting anything startling.
