Southampton Football Club is pleased to announce that Kelvin Davis has been appointed as Senior First Team Coach.

A club legend who played for a decade at Saints, the former goalkeeper replaces Eric Black.

The 41-year-old was a long-time captain at Saints, making 301 appearances while helping guide the club back to the Premier League.

Davis had been working as Football Development Executive since his retirement in 2016, providing support to players at all levels, but he now joins Mauricio Pellegrino’s first-team coaching staff.

Everyone at the club is excited to have Kelvin back within the first team environment where he shared many successful years with the club.

Davis said: “I'm excited, I'm very proud. For me, it's a natural progression and, obviously, I'm very excited about being on the frontline and being able to help and support the manager, the first-team players and ultimately the club.

“It's a time in the season when I wasn't obviously expecting it to come along, but it has, it's presented itself, and obviously I'm looking to get my teeth into the current situation and try to support and help the first-team and the club as quickly as I can.”

Big role that for Kelvin, Sentiment aside surely we should be aiming for higher.

I totally agree. As long as he doesn’t try and give Fraser advice about near post saves!

I said a few days ago that he was the obvious candidate to be caretaker, in the event that we were to sack MP without a replacement lined up.

"Club legend promoted to mask poor form" should have been the headline

Have no view on his coaching abilities (though the club will know), but pleased if it will help a decent guy get along on his career path. Few chances come along at PL level.

Can only be a good thing. I’m sure when we appoint a proper manager they will bring their own assistant though.

I think we’ve possibly got a good coach in MP - what we haven’t got is a Mr Nasty who can throw a few tea cups about at half time. Could well be the missing off field piece.

As someone once said “you don’t have to have been a horse, to become a jockey”

but you do wonder if a former goalkeeper can help to improve our players. It feels more like an appointment that will help with spirit and motivation.
If that is the case then it begs the question, what is Pellegrino bringing to the party?

Already looking forward to the club statement which ends:

'Kelvin Davis has been placed in charge of first team affairs on a temporary basis'

Another step closer to 'caretaker manager Kelvin Davis'!

Excellent news, the players need a "club man" with a very positive attitude to raise morale at this difficult time

Dodgy near post stuff actually happened rarely, it’s why you remember it. KD was brilliant at getting in the right position. He never came across as flashy because he never needed to. I think he could help FF who sometimes is not in the best position especially with long range shots, leaving himself too much to do to pull off the save.
Whatever, well done to him and let’s hope he a success.
