Listening to the news this morning and it's snow in a lot of places causing chaos as usual. Looking out of my window and the sun is shining and the sky is blue and not a flake anywhere. God's country strikes again. Mind you the rest of the week doesn't sound too brilliant.

You'd be better off using a glass hp. Less messy.

A slight dusting outside so far but not enough to make a snowball really. Think it might be a bit whiter when I wake up tomorrow. Plymouth probably at a standstill already but I'm not about to go out and see. I do not like the white stuff.

Think I am probably snowed in already. The gritters didnt make it as far as the side streets in PL3 so a couple of inches of snow and -5 might make it interesting getting up the hill in the morning.

Two inches of snow overnight.....had to pick Mrs Plym up last night just before 10pm.....car was reading that the temperature was 18F or in new money -8C.
Twelve miles down the road at Sevenoaks reports of 6 inches of snow....we'll not bother to go for our walk around Knole Park today.
Railway has cancelled hundreds of trains....schools closing as well.
Stop smirking BC we're not geared up for bad weather in NW Kent.

Bleedy lunacy, manged to go to the parcel depot at 7 this morning and into town to pick up new glasses. A couple of hours later and Plymouth have declared a state of emergency, schools are shut, everyone has gone home and Sainsbury's aren't taking anymore food orders until Friday deliveries. What has the world come to, its winter......... Have just cleared my Peverell steps and gritted on my own because the council clearly cant be arsed/have all gone home.

Well we had 3 jobs in paignton, then on to Exeter then Taunton and back, no problems until we hit Plymouth as the traffic was stupid. Why are people out when they have no need to be.. Mutley and the surrounding area was grid locked at 11 as one of my vans was trying to get from mutley to green bank for a break down took an hour.. Let the freeze continue but rid the snow..

Keep warm everyone, wrap up the pipes as they are starting to freeze up as are the condensate pipes on the boilers. If you have any concerns just send me a message..

The card reader is overheating need to put it out side...:mad:

There are several good reasons why Plymouth grinds to a halt if it snows here. The first and obvious one is that we are just not used to it. I was born and bred here and have lived here for almost all of my life except when Service postings did not allow. It just doesn't snow that often. The second is that Plymouth is full of hills and a lot of them are very steep. Nearly all areas have them and where I live in the Laira/Lipson area there are very very steep ones everywhere. It doesn't take much for it to throw the roads into chaos. People also commute and a fair bit is from rural areas. These areas are the ones that normally protect Plymouth from the worst of snow like weather. If it looks like snow then they get sent home or some of them would just not make it. Offices etc come to a grinding halt.

Got up this morning and threw the curtains open only to have to reach for the shades to stop the snow blindness kicking in. Everything was white. Despite it snowing on and off for most of the day nothing much else laid around here. More that some of the snow had melted by the time evening came. One thing I did notice on my shed though. Where the snow had begun to melt it had formed icicles on the side of the roof. Just shows how cold the air is. This evening it is very cold outside but it hasn't snowed again. Not looking forward to tomorrow though because along with the snow coming back the wind is going to come with it. I hate it when it's very windy more than snowing due to all the large trees around us.

From Nov. to April we have by law to change to winter tires.
Also when it snows we are responsible to clear the pavement in front of your house.
You never drive with snow on your car.
Most cities have several snowplows and gritting trucks.
This is Canada where it drops to -40 although here on the West Coast it's usually -10
Don't worry Guys Spring is on it's way.
    Drive safe

Most of that BC is not done in the UK as you would know.....I didn't realize by law you had to use winter tires/tyres for 6 months of the year.

Boiler not working this morning when I got up....my boiler is in the loft and it was saying the fault was F4....which could mean the condensate pipe had frozen....switching the boiler off for safety......happened a few years back...British Gas will not cover that in their servicing package .....I assume it would happen so often they wouldn't have time to do boiler breakdowns (I can hear Joe chuckling away in the background).
This condensate pipe runs down the outside wall from the boiler to a gutter drain, I have insulated it for frost protection but that was 6/7 years back when I had the new heating system installed, I'll re-do it once spring arrives.
So there I am at 0630 hrs pouring hot water over each elbow joint to try and defrost it......three kettles of water later plus visits to the loft to reset the boiler and I succeeded to de-ice the pipe. Up a ladder at such an early hour with a hot kettle in the snow is not to be recommended at nearly 79 (later this month) luckily I'm still reasonable fit enough to do it.

PS..... could have sworn I saw a Bear down the bottom of the garden (on a short visit from BC I assume, or was it a Fox), the steam from the kettle probably blurred my vision........

So BC...does that mean you own 8/10 complete wheels for every vehicle you own....or is it just tyres that you have put on your wheels as the seasons change ?
Sounds a lucrative business for your local garage twice a year.......of course complete wheels you could change yourself.

I was out at around 11ish yesterday while it was snowing: it was mayhem. The hill from Hyde Park shops up to Perverell Park Road was proving too steep for some, forming a big queue, and Mannamead Road was the same although presumably both had been gritted at some point. It was almost impossible to avoid the car sliding so I gave it up.

Our street has not been gritted and it's a sheet of ice out there now. A vehicle slid into a parked car in the afternoon, doing damage, luckily not mine!

The telling statement was on the local news. The DCC Transport Manager (or similar) was interviewed in the Emergency Control Room. He was asked about the "new snowblowers". He confirmed they were in use and the said it was the first time since they were bought 6 years ago. How can you justify laying out public funds on kit that's only going to be used once every 6 years?

If you have a connection with the weather god.....who could tell you.... that you will only need the snowblower once every six years fair enough notDistant.....you could save the council a fortune with your insider information.

Have a vision of a snowblower relocating the road snow 3ft up the house walls either side.....clear road....trouble is people cannot get out of their front doors to use it.
