    Match Preview
QPR begin life after the international break with a trip to Portman Road this weekend, where the R’s will take on Paul Hurst’s Ipswich side.

The Tractor Boys are still looking to pick up their first win at home this season but will be buoyed by their excellent victory over Swansea at the Liberty Stadium last time out.

After five-and-a-half years under Mick McCarthy, Ipswich have found the transitional period of adopting a new manager difficult.

The opted to appoint Paul Hurst who had done excellent jobs with Grimsby and Shrewsbury in the lower divisions – taking the latter to the League One play-off final last year.

But they’ve had a challenging start to the season, which is perhaps not too surprising given the high player turnover they had over the summer.

However, performances have been improving of late and their victory over Swansea, who comfortably beat Rangers 3-0 a week before, highlights the progress they are making.

McClaren’s side have bounced back well from that disappointing afternoon in Wales. Rangers went on to deservedly beat Reading and then produced a fine second half performance to secure a home draw against Derby.

QPR have picked up just one point in their last three visits to Portman Road with last year’s game ending in a dull 0-0 draw on Boxing Day.

But the R’s look a far more dangerous side on the road this season and will be hoping to prolong Ipswich’s winless run at home on Saturday.

Does any one have any idea on their prefered starting line up?

As Luongo and Hemed travelled with international duties, I would rest them. I presume that Bidwell will be still injured or if better, then perhaps he may not be match fit, so I have also ommitted him. To replace Bidwell, I propose Rangel and I admit that I have no idea if he can play left back, but it allows for Kakay to get a run out, which in my opinion can only be a good idea.

As a result, I would keep it 4-2-3-1 and along the lines of:

    ------------------------ Lumley ---------------------
    -- Kakay --- Leistner ---- Lynch --- Rangel--
    ---------------- Cousins --Cameron--------------
    -- Wszolek------------ Eze ----------Freeman--
    ------------------------- Wells ----------------------

I would also have BOS, Smyth and Smith on the bench with the intention of using all three of them as reserves to main the pressing and fast counter attack ablility. It would also allow us to go 4-4-2 if needed.

I look forward to seeing your thoughts and to watching what McClaren will finally decide on.

Yep I'd go with that formation Ski, but wasn't Cousins injured last time out, twisted ankle or something? Maybe Scowan for him otherwise not a bad side and Pawel offers Kakay back up on the right as well as being an attacking threat.......

I admit that am not fully up to date with the injury status. However, I think that you are fully correct that he went of injured.

In this case, it does make sense to re-instate Scowen.

So the updated team would be:

    ------------------------ Lumley ---------------------
    -- Kakay --- Leistner ---- Lynch --- Rangel--
    ---------------- Scowen -- Cameron--------------
    -- Wszolek------------ Eze ----------Freeman--
    ------------------------- Wells ----------------------

It still makes for a very strong team, however the reserves on the bench may be a bit thin, so I would include our jet-lagged internatonals.:)

Think Luongo has played just the one game in Kuwait during this 2 week break. If so he should be ok to start in where you have Scowen. Furlong played 45 minutes against Wham in a friendly so maybe he will be in contention. Bidwell and Cousins too as it was reported their injuries weren't serious and were expected to train this week. No idea if they have though! Hamaleinen (spelling?) Is another alternative at LB. Rangel looked well out of position there to me.

Oslo, congratulations for being so well briefed on our players. I am impressed!

Yes, Hanneleinen (?) is the obvious back up for left back, but he still lacks experience.

However I agree with you that a youngster in his natural position is probably better than an experienced player out of position.

Then for right back who would you play? I believe McCkaren will favour Rangel over Furlong. That is the Catch 22.

I saw Furlong in training with the others in a clip they have on the Official this week, but think perhaps he'll be on the Bench at first after such a long break, and hopefully get some time near the end at Ipswich when we are 3 or 4 up.

Joe Felix is the young back (RB I think but can play on either side), that is really being touted at the club as the next breakthrough player
(would nice to have a home grown (well sort of...from Fulham a year ago) full back)
Maybe away at Ipswich might be too soon, but just maybe!

To get us in the mood for tomorrow here's footage of a 3-3 draw with Ipswich from 1977/78 at HQ, must admit I hadn't seen this online before but have to say that Ipswich were a bloody good side with the likes of Burley, Mills, Beatie, Wark, Mariner in their line up, whereas we were on a bit of a downward curve even though it was only a season or so after our finest season......

Oh and the legendary Brian Moore is commentating....

Here's another video from 75/76 at their place, lovely goal from Don Givens and polite applause from their fans.....plus we are playing in that wonderful Feyernord change kit.......

WLS have both Bidwell and Cousins having fitness tests before the game tomorrow, both have resumed training this week. Ipswich supposedly have a number of players doubtful due a virus, and some injury worries.
