    Swansea City v Northampton Town

    Competition - League Cup
    Venue - Liberty Stadium
    Date - 13 August 2019
    Kick off - 19.45

Following their hard fought and deserved draw away to promotion hopefuls Derby County last Saturday, next up for Steve Cooper’s Swansea squad is the visit of Northampton to The Liberty in the League Cup.

“We're taking it very seriously and we absolutely want to be ready," said Swans boss Steve Cooper. "The objective for us is to get the idea of how we want to play right at the top level. We're still getting towards that, but the intentions are right and the progress is good."

Likely to be in goal for the Cobblers is a face that will be familiar to the Jack Army .... Northampton goalkeeper, David Cornell, progressed through the academy at Swansea City but only played one senior game for the Swans. His sole appearance came in a home cup defeat to Scunthorpe United in 2009 when Swansea had three men sent off.

Cornell had loan spells at Hereford, St Mirren and Portsmouth before moving to England permanently when signing for Oldham Athletic in 2015. A year and 17 appearances later, the 28-year-old switched to the Cobblers and has been there ever since, playing 72 matches across three and a bit seasons.

In some respects, there are two chief targets for the Cobblers when they head across the border into South Wales this evening: the first is to play well, the second is to find out which fringe players are capable of giving Manager Keith Curle a selection headache.

These two teams last met in a League One fixture at Sixfields just over 11 years ago, when Poul Hubertz scored twice in a 4-2 home victory.

Since then, the teams have experienced far different fortunes - the Swans have experienced seven seasons in the Premier League, including two top-10 finishes, while the Cobblers have yo-yoed between the bottom two tiers of England's Football League pyramid.

With both Managers likely to make a number of changes from last Saturday’s starting teams, it is difficult to forecast what will happen this evening.

That said, I’m going for a 3-1 home win. <cheers>

4-0 , in a very much one sided game and thats no disrespect meant to N/Hampton , but even with a so called second string I expect we'll win this at a canter . Curle is eyeing the league rather than this cup and after Coopers comments after Saturdays game he'll be expecting and demanding a win along with a good performance

Should win but we have seen so many times that cup games can produce funny results.....2 - 1 narrow win if over confident...

Does this team selection mean we are doing an all-out assault on the League?
