And in fact it goes further than that. If we didn't have those doctors and nurses, the NHS would be about 50% staffed. Perhaps you can say that shouldn't be the case and we should train more people at home (from all backgrounds, not just white Christians), but is is and we have to live in that very real world.

I should have added that the Surgeon was Asian who led the team who did the Op. Classic isn't it. The Eye specialists who treat my wife for her Macular Degeneration are also either Indian or Eastern European. Not an English eye specialist in sight (excuse the pun). My Dentist is Polish.

Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish activist, sails out of Plymouth on the Malizia 11, a high speed 60ft eco-friendly global racing yacht, on a two week journey to New York to speak at the UN Climate Action Summit on Sept 23rd, Greta who has stopped flying because of the carbon jets emit, will join large demonstrations planned for Sept 20th and 27th.

    Daily Telegraph...Thurs...15/08/2019.

My thoughts....Getting a little peed-off with this wonder woman....who seems to be 16 yrs-old for ever.....high media attention (are reporters carbon efficient, I doubt it, we wouldn't get to hear the news if they where).

This eco-friendly global racing yacht she's on, I bet cost a fortune to build...and wouldn't be in the slightest eco-friendly to manufacture. Yet it must be using state of the art navigation equipment to find it's way across the ocean....no simple chart or compass or sextant readings.....yet we're told that their toilet is just a bucket on deck....with poo only written on it (my mind goes into overdrive thinking of how you achieve that)....Greta is dressed in state of the art clothing...how does she use such a bucket on the deck of a high speed racing yacht being buffeted to and fro (I assume she's been practising).

So when this conference is finished...does she have to wait for seasonal trade winds to help get her back to Europe....and in the meanwhile is she sleeping rough to avoid damaging the environment more by using hotel facilities.

You might of guessed by now my patience is wearing thin regarding this sixteen year old wonder-women....personally enough is enough and for sure she won't be eating a typical American T-bone steak whilst she's out there....think of the cost that would cause the environment to produce....let me know when she's seventeen....no candles on her cake to damage the ozone layers.

State of NHS.....Mrs Plym phoned the doctors surgery this morning ( Aug 16th) for an appointment and when she finally got through was quoted Sept 20th....a month and four days away....she queried this date and was told that there were two Doctors on holiday and two off sick (not surprised)....the alternative is to phone the surgery 8am each morning and see if there is a cancellation....but of course with maybe up to 20/30 people doing the same thing your chances are limited.

    Wow, savage.

I suppose hypocrisy is an easy trap to fall into when you're any kind of activist, idealist or whatever. Like my sister is very eco and all that jazz, but then drives an SUV.... I feel like if you're trying to advocate for something, you need to have a pretty high sense of self-awareness, picking and choosing which you do and what you ignore is kind of double-standards.

Although I suppose something is better than nothing. I try to do my part, but ultimately the corporations are the ones that need to make a change. Plastic packaging for example is a huge waste and the amount of CO2 produced by plastic production is quite high.

And I'd rather not fly because I don't like planes but for us ordinary plebs, it's basically impossible to get to the US without flying.

Well the enviro-mentalists don't have a good track record strategically. It was they who made us all buy diesel cars, now the spawn of the devil. It is they now obsessing about plastic without considering what it means for food waste or how many trees must die to make paper bags. It is they now agitating for all electric cars without discussing the transmission losses arising from pushing all that electricity around the grid or where all those rare materials to make batteries are going to come from.

Not to mention the generation of all that electricity when demand skyrockets due to the proliferation of electric vehicles. With current levels of demand, renewable sources barely reach 50% of electricity generation (and that was, I think, a one off when conditions just happened to be right), what percentage would be renewable sources if demand increases, as increasing renewable energy sources is not exactly easy.

But yes, thinking of the bigger picture seems to not be the order of the day among environmentalists... Or politicians for that matter.

    HERE WE GO....Vaping v Tobacco.

A patient has died after developing a severe respiratory disease due to vaping in the first such death in the US, says health officials.

It comes as experts investigate a mystery lung disease across the US that is linked to use of e-cigarettes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said there were 193 "potential cases" in 22 US states.

Many of the cases involved vaping THC, the main active compound in cannabis, CDC experts said.

The cases were reported over the course of two months between 28th June and 20th August.

The person who died was "hospitalized with unexplained illness after reported vaping or e-cigarette use" , Dr Jennifer Layden, the chief medical and state epidermiologist in Illinois, said.

CDC director Robert Redfield said: "We are saddened to hear of the first death related to the outbreak of severe lung disease in those who use e-cigarette or 'vaping' devices,"

He added: "this tragic death in Illinois reinforces.the serious risks associated with e-cigarette products."

My thoughts.....Lungs thrive on oxygen don't they.....end of comment.

My thoughts. The emissions from the average car engine unless it is electric are equally as bad for lungs as smoking is so if you drive a car then pontificating to smokers about the evils has far less validity than it would if you didn't have a car. End of comment.

Except transportation is an essential part our industries that pay our wages, the services and supplies that keep us alive and our relationships with family and friends. Smoking on the other hand is the entirely pointless process of inhaling carcinogenic substances.

If it were down to me, I would ban smoking (of any kind) in a public place. Sure you have a right to ingest disgusting carcinogenic substances if you want to, but why should that impinge on my right to not have to inhale the aforementioned substances? Not everyone is a smoker, so why should they have to inhale your crap just because you're inconsiderate and don't give a damn about anyone else so long as you get your nicotine fix? Reminds me of 2012 when I went to a Blur concert at Hyde Park. By the evening it was quite packed and you could make your way slowly through the crowd but wherever you went you'd be near a smoker and inhale their crap, then you'd move and then you'd come across another smoker and inhale their crap... you could not get away from them. So bloody annoying as a non-smoker.

If you wanna do that crap in your own house, then go ahead. But out in public? Keep it away from me.

Thanks for the advice but I'm a non smoker. There are numerous things that are "not good for you". Breathing car fumes is one and I don't drive either. Drinking in public places causes problems with those who can't take it and feel they have to perform to the masses. Ban them all I say. Everyone probably does something that isn't either good for them or good for the planet. Lets just ban the lot and turn to a godly way by staying home and doing feck all day in day out. I just love how up their own arse people can get when it isn't their own particular vice.

I don't care about people doing things which are not good for them, they can do whatever they like. When it starts impinging on me, then I start to take issue. As notdistant says, driving (whether your own car or public transport) is pretty much a requirement for modern society, and most people can drink in public without it impinging others, and if they do start to impinge others, there will be consequences that they will have to accept (i.e. getting arrested). There's no consequences for smokers impinging on other people with their filth sticks, we just have to suck it up and accept it.

You could always drink inside the Establishment where smoking is banned for example. Not all smokers impinge on other's air space in public spaces either. Too many cars and too much exhaust. Bound to be some as there is bound to be some smoke somewhere. Like I said it is all too easy to object to everyone else as long as the one thing I do is ok with me. We all get a bit hypocritical when it suits. I acknowledge you have an opinion and are entitled to it even if I think it's a tad pompous Pompey.

CASHPOINTS CLOSE AT RATE OF 10 EVERY DAY.

Residents of Battle, the historic East Sussex town, are suffering without a 24-hour cashpoint. and have to travel six miles to Hastings to get their money. Paul Redstone, who is campaigning to keep machines, told 'The Mail on Sunday' . Elderly residents are particularly affected, as well as those who don't drive....and you won't believe how many times we're asked by tourists, 'Where's the nearest ATM ? '.
They cannot believe we haven't got one in the High Street. It has definitely impacted businesses, local shops, residents and restaurants.

Part of an article in The Daily Telegraph...26/08/2019.

My thoughts.....it's true that many small restaurants and cafe's only take cash....plus my local Halifax doesn't open Thursdays or Saturdays (although it has a ATM)....(16,000 pop)...and suggests that you go to Bromley if you need a Branch (5 miles away)....which means difficulty in parking....so probably means that any other shopping you would do would be lost also to Bromley.

Does that seem logical or make sense....High Streets are dying without the help of Banks/Building Societies.

I don't get why an ATM has to be attached to a Bank. There are ATMs all over the place so why doesn't some enterprising business locally offer to have one. Having ATM in shop or business means more footfall and therefore possibly more customers. As you may guess I'm a cash person being a bit staid in things but I have to say there are few places I go that don't do cards for payments. The Banks are making it increasingly difficult for customers to be a bit old fashioned. To buy online my Bank has told me I may need to confirm my identity soon if using my card. I never buy online but if I did I would need an App. I keep getting encouraged to do all my Banking stuff online. I refuse. I go into my Bank and they want me to speak to or rather use a machine for everything rather than a person. I refuse. It's like Supermarkets with their self service stuff. I refuse. Maybe more should refuse andd perhaps these places would get the message. If you want my cash then earn it and don't make me do all of your work for you. You'll have me stacking the shelves next.

The Supermarkets want you to order online....and then help the driver carry it in.

7am on a Saturday morning you have difficulty getting around the aisles...because of online trolleys blocking the way....they just park them anywhere....peasants.
