As for mortgages, here is my advice: buy a big house in Ponders End (it's in North London), then sell it after ten years and move to Constable Country. You'll not regret it. No worries.
Don't waste your time with a mortgage, you are just chucking your money away. What you want to do is rent, that way you get to free up the capital you'd otherwise be forking out in interest payments. For as little as £1000 a month you can rent a compact and bijou minimalist room in a shared property.
