Football managers and players win or lose matches, football players and managers are mercenaries and will go to whoever pays them the most money. They do not give a toss if there are 10,000 there or 100,000 as long as they are getting paid. See Asamoah Gyan who left a Premier league team averaging gates of over 40,000 to move to a team in the Middle East whose crowds were lower than those Sunderland reserves got at Eppleton Colliery Welfare because he got paid more money.

You are treating all players as being one generic entity. They are human just like the rest of us, and for most humans playing in front of a positive supportive crowd would be preferable to playing in front of people being hostile towards you.

Or perhaps you are generalising about 30,000 Sunderland fans?

Not at all.. We have some great fans.. However we do seem to have forgotten how to support the team these days and we do have more than our fair share of fans who abuse players, manager and owners..

To be brutally frank I am absolutely amazed we are getting 30,000 people to watch the absolute shower of **** that we have had the misfortune to endure for 10 years, including almost a full calendar year with no home wins and only 9 goals scored, 5 of which were penalties. We have suffered back to back relegations and find ourselves in the lowest position we have ever been in 140 years. Our fans deserve a medal never mind criticism, negativity has been on the pitch from the players not from on the terraces from the long suffering fans.

You're both right, it is commendable how many people we still have going to games given the ****e we've had to put up with but it's also true that the atmosphere is flat and if it wasn't we'd have more points on the board.

Totally understandable why it's the way it is but it's undeniable the atmosphere is poor.

    Agree with this Nacho,

I was having a look at the Cleveland Browns in the NFL.

Since 1999 they have only had 2 seasons when they have won more games than they have lost and whilst their attendance dropped slightly in 2017 (63k of a 67k stadium) their fans continued to cheer the team on.

Regardless of the **** that is being served up other clubs should feel intimidated when they visit and the fans have a hell of a lot to do with this.

Aye it's a legitimate criticism, understandable as it is. It's been one kick in the balls after another and it's been going on for years and years, it'd get anyone down. Even the takeover being confirmed didn't help because it isn't really one at this stage.

The good news is that we have some of the best fans in the country when things are at least going ok and it wouldn't take long at all to get the stadium rocking if our players can manage to put the round thing in the netty thing on a regular basis.

Performances and results on the pitch would create a better "atmosphere", the fans can not affect results, otherwise we would still be in the Premier league and Bournemouth would still be in the third division as our attendances are treble theirs.

It's not all about the attendance figures though.

Some of these "smaller clubs" crowds generate an atmosphere that encourages the players during the match and intimidates the opposition. We should be able to do that to a greater extent with the additional numbers we attract.

Of course they can. Opposition managers and players know full well that if they get an early goal against us there will be nervous tension in the ground and obviously that rubs off on the players. Always has and always will.

    Fans can’t impact results?

The expression ‘12th man’ isn’t fantasy, it’s very, very real.

I swear to this day that the Fulwell End blew on that spinning Craig Russell shot in Reidy’s first game and made it dip in. I remember the Sheffield United playoff when a stressful night became a party, I remember Kierans free kick when the whole team was nerveless and energised.

I also see the great supported teams, Liverpool, Leeds, Celtic, Rangers, Dortmund etc, late goals galore, late wins galore. Never pack it in.

The word support is not about football fans, it’s about life. We have 30,000 attendees, 30,000 followers. We have, at the moment about 8-10,000 supporters.

When Reid had the place bouncing, when Keane took us up, we had 44,000 followers and 42,000 supporters.

If the manager and team represents us proudly, if the side stands tall, they will be back.

I’d be close to tears of joy to have a crowd like that now, supporting and lifting the team. I used to stand in the Main Stand Roker, **** me we were rowdy ourselves in there, but I used to love watching the Fulwell End almost as much as the games sometimes, and I hope they used to look back at us in our little corner giving it all.

We are still ****ing here and this club of ours still stands for something, it still matters.

I genuinely think if we pull in a couple of wins and do well in January we can ****ing do it together, we the fans can help pull the lads up.

The club is in our blood isn’t enough. It’s the ****ing cells of our blood, it’s our health and ****ing air at times. We should be fighting for it regardless. RAW is absolutely right, we are capable of building it up, but many seem determined to tear it down.

Not for the first time this should be up on the dressing room wall. Get Finchy from The Office to read it out over the PA before kickoff for good measure.

Over here in the AFL at the home games for Port Adelaide the fans all sing "never tear us apart" by INXS as it's played over the tannoy. Even when the teams playing **** the fans belt it out before every game.

In the NRL the Canberra Raiders do the Viking lap just before kick off. Sounds bloody impressive.

    Some great posts on here.

Time to stop whinging (I have exorcised my gripes), back the lads and make a difference. Hopefully this is reflected on the pitch soon enough.

In better news, I see L&G have unvested into the Vaux site - which is positive news for the city. They're a massive and progressive investor

Fans can't effect what happens on the pitch but let's just run with they can for the sake of argument. Our fans are like a punch drunk boxer who has just gone 11 rounds with the world champion, they have been beaten into submission. Only the knockout blow of going down to the fourth division could make things any worse.

Say our fans loudly booed our own players from kickoff until full time, threw things at them and shouted abuse in their faces as they went off at half time. Can you honestly tell me that you don't think that would affect the players?
