Sirotkin's backers didn't fully pay Williams and pulled out, Kubica is leaving and so to are some sponsors. All looked so promising for them at the start of the hybrid era.

I really hope Williams can put together a better car for 2020. Just to be able to fight a few back markers would be better than being SO far behind.

They get an extra 10m over the standard teams so they should survive still. This season has been a disaster for them, hope they are better placed next year, I have hope but no real belief, hope that they prove me wrong.

Just reading the Ross is considering tweeking Safety car restarts to 'spice' things up!!!! Not sure on this, it's a bit artificial. Does Cart or Nascar do something similar, bunch them up then let them race again????

Looks like VW group (Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, VW, and Škoda) wont be coming into F1 ever!!!!!! They made a press statement yesterday stating that they are pulling out of all internal combustion engined racing to focus on electric powered racing!
I wonder if this is also why Merc seem a little reluctant to talk about the future? I wonder if Liberty are starting to regret their purchase?

I have said it before . F1 needs to make it's mind up .

Go Electric ( won't be for years as the Other crowd have a contract Bernie would be proud of ) .

Or go back to loud noisy engines .

IMHO the writing is on the wall for what I want .

As Formula E gains prominence, the thing that separates F1 from it is speed and spectacle.

Thats the direction I would consider: How do we make F1 the fastest and most exciting series in the world?

because for all FE is the future technologically, it’s absolutely dire.

Meh. Another Canadian with a lot of money.

Wonder if another good season for Russell could put him in the frame for a 2021 Mercedes seat?

I'm just looking at the following 4 things and wondering if they will:

McLaren all of a sudden getting a Mercedes deal.

Toto Wolf saying there is nothing left for Mercedes to achieve.

Penske rumours of buying the team.

Mercedes in Formula E and the company as a whole moving to electrification.

I can see the writing on the wall if Merc leave. If Liberty don't do something radical, I feel, it may be too late to save F1!!! I think Formula E is on a great long term path to replace F1. They have come a long way in a few years, so if they keep up their development I believe it will overtake F1 in viewer numbers and the racing will get better. Plus the technological showcase Formula E will create will be massive in PR terms. So I would expect most manufacturers wanting to get in on it asap.
OK so I'm not sure about fan boost and the extra power allowable for a few laps, but I suppose some of that is similar to limited Turbo Boost in years gone by, mind you that was for engine reliability. It might be a bit artificial but they are in the early days of the technology and hopefully they will start to have enough energy to be able to race on 'normal' racing circuits and then they can open up aero and chassis design.

The future of F1 as it is has to be different, but as a brand it is still Iconic. F1 will need to reinvent itself but it is also has the characters. Ferrari may be justified in its grip on F1. I don't believe there is anything to stop F1 becoming electric contractually, what matters will be whether it is the most macho series.
Will electric power remove the glamour of a the mechanic input, you are left thinking yes. I guess it has got at least 20 years in it and I am sure Liberty's business case paid back long before then.
As a sailor, I am a fan of the Vendee Globe where Alex Thompson and Hugo Boss are still striving to win. Even wind power can be extremely exciting and Alex talks calmly about being ship wrecked in the southern ocean. Here is a video of being on the edge, in his Hugo Boss suit, at low speed. It is called the Mast Walk. he also did the Keel Walk and the Sky Walk.

Sorry . I thought you meant the rumour about Merc threatening to leave if they don’t get preferential treatment similar to Ferrari . I will try and find the article at the weekend and post it on here .

I fully agree. Andreas Seidl is no mug and he has made the call to switch to Mercedes engines. It strikes me as a bit of strategic positioning and a very shrewd one at that.

There comes a point for a team like Mercedes, who remember are really here to sell road cars by marketing themselves via F1, where domination no longer is the marketing they want or need.

As you rightly point out, car makers are now all in Formula E and that’s where road car futures lie. Mercedes are already making a good fist of that and will continue to do so.

Despite Formula E being the future for road cars, it’s not yet fast enough to engulf F1 and therefore there’s every reason for big brands to stay in F1 as engine manufacturers. It’s revenue for them and keeps them in the F1 loop and connected with “fast”, which whether you like it or not, sells.

However you wouldn’t want to stay in F1 with just Force India and Williams- McLaren are the type of outfit who can put a Merc engine on some podiums and to their credit, McLaren have shown some real humility and willingness to dig down and rebuild from scratch, looking like a team who may emerge as a podium contender from 2021 onwards.

It just has that feel about it. Hamilton hasn’t got too long left in the sport, and where would Merc wanna go after him? Verstappen maybe but Hamilton is a mighty act to follow.

I think Merc might walk away whilst they’re at the top and preserve a bit of “myth/legend” about them which is all good for their brand.

I’m excited to watch McLaren develop under James Key, Andreas Seidl and with Mercedes power, things look like they can improve. They are a younger hungrier outfit than they were. Toppling the front three is a big ask though and is at least two years away if not 3-4.

As always though, the tectonic of F1 plates move slowly and quietly under the surface so it might take a while to unfold!

Would be nice to gain another manufacturer but looks unlikely at this point doesn’t it
