So It is being reported that the superspreader at the centre of the outbreak picked it up in Singapore, went skiing in the Alps, and came home, before releasing he had met someone with coronavirus. He then realized he felt a little flu-ey and took himself to hospital. He has infected at least 11 people.

    He is fully recovered.

I read that they reckon a vaccine would be unlikely to be widely available before the end of the year, the virus will mutate by then as well...

This is the big worry. It hits London. Boris may need his cycle lane, because the underground will be deserted as everyone takes to two wheels

Students are walking around Brighton wearing masks now. A barber rang into LBC complaining that he had four of them, masked up and waiting for a trim. Customers arriving took one look at them, assumed it was a reflection on the salon's hygene and walked out again!

Although I'm not sure there's any reason to panic (yet), I think people may well start to over react to the present threat.

There's absolutely no reason to panic. Someone said that the number of cases in the UK had doubled. Yes, from 4 to 8 and no more since!

    Why?

It strikes me that the reaction to this virus is very over the top. The poor bloke named as a ‘super spreader’ has done nothing wrong to get his picture all over the media. It’s a cough and a temperature for 39 out of 40 people, and the unlucky one is someone with an already weakened immune system. People are only being hospitalised to isolate them. On average 600 people die from another infectious disease, flu, every year in this country (an estimated 10,000 plus in bad years like 2008/09) so far we have zero deaths from this stuff.

There is a chance that we have been lied to by the Chinese about the severity of the disease, but we are getting our own look at it now. It’s obvious why it’s spread so wide and deep in China - very different traditions re spitting and coughing without covering your mouth. And acupuncture is **** at dealing with viruses.

I'd be more assured if China was an open Country. Its what they're not telling us which concerns me. Not over-reacting, but probably give the game a miss Saturday

Thank you Stan, I have been trying to push this ...but it is hard to get a moderate opinion out there when we are being fed " we are all going to die" rhetoric from the media and social media.

I was a bit worried we were being lied to by Chinese, and yes they definitely tried to cover it up....

But there are enough non Chinese cases to see that most infections are of the ordinary flu like symptoms, not too severe.
Only the old, the very young and the ill are at real risk I still believe.

I think the numbers have already peaked in China...and the longer we can stop the spread to the west ( it will happen) the better it will be...for NHS, stockpiling of medicine etc

It’s good to hear from someone who understands this stuff. Our friend in the London Ambulance Service has commented to me on similar lines.

Of the 9 confirmed UK cases 8 have now been sent home with the all clear and the ninth was only diagnosed a couple of days ago. It’s milder than flu. The death rate in China will be higher than the west because the health system is crap and expensive for users, so many don’t have access to it, and their average health status is worse. Which is why people are essentially being locked in their own homes. The amazing propaganda of 1000 bed hospitals being built in a week is just that, propaganda. You can build it but you can’t staff it without stripping staff from other places. It’s just an isolation unit, not a treatment centre.

If you feel ill stay at home, follow advice but don’t bother the NHS unless you really need it, leave NHS resources for the properly ill. In other words, do what you would do if you had flu.

With due deference to Beth's scientific knowledge and common sense, surely most people could already see that the threat from this thing was being hugely exaggerated?

I think it was an editor of either the Mail or Express who once said 'if our front page doesn't either outrage or terrify our readers, we aren't doing our jobs properly'.

I do hope I am right. But so far I have seen nothing to dissuade me from my belief.

It will come to the UK, there will be a surge of people rushing to the NHS, and some people will unfortunately die.
It is a sad sad fact that several thousand people die of seasonal flu every year. This year will not be different, it will just have a different name

Senator Cotton: China Refusing to Hand Over Evidence About Wuhan BioLab

Senator Tom Cotton says that China is refusing to hand over evidence concerning the bio-safety level 4 research lab in Wuhan despite a new report from biological scientists at the South China University of Technology saying it may have been the source of the coronavirus outbreak.

During an appearance on Fox News, Cotton told Maria Bartiromo that new evidence confirmed the source of the virus was not the meat market in Wuhan.

“Here is what we do know. This virus did not originate in the Wuhan animal market,” said Cotton. “Epidemiologists who are widely respected from China published a study in the international journal Lancet have demonstrated that several of the original cases did NOT have any contact with that food market. The virus went into that food market before it came out of that food market. So we don’t know where it originated… We also know that only a few miles away from that market is China’s only bio-safety Level Four Super Laboratory that researches human infectious diseases.”

Cotton said that China’s “duplicity and dishonesty” meant that questions needed to be asked about the lab but that “China right now is not giving any evidence on that question at all” and Beijing was being “very secretive” on what happens at the lab.

Cotton also accused China of consistently blocking American scientists from traveling to Wuhan to assist in discovering the origins of the virus.

A new report by scientists at the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China concludes that “the killer coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory in Wuhan.”

One of the laboratories named in the report which was conducting research on bat coronavirus was located just 280 meters from the site of the Wuhan meat market.

For weeks, the media has demonized anyone who suggested the lab could have been responsible for the coronavirus outbreak as a dangerous conspiracy theorist peddling fake news.

However, now that CNN/NY Times journalist Ezra Cheung tweeted precisely that yesterday, one wonders whether they will begin to change their tune.

#BREAKING: South China University of Technology biologist Xiao Botao exposed that the #COVID19 might have originated from an animal research lab 280m away from the epicentre of the outbreak. The scientists were reportedly bitten by bats used for a test on louse. H/T:
