The very point was that bird flu was banded about as being a massive killing pandemic. It lasted over a year and turned out to only kill as many as normal flu.
You can get all hysterical if you like, thats your prerogative.
Personally i will reserve judgement for now whilst washing my hands more regularly ;)

Lets not forget Aids is a global pandemic and still after all these years has a very large infected percentage but dont let that get in the way of a media frenzy.

I'm not getting hysterical at all, I just think it's sensible to follow instructions provided by the experts who are qualified to advise about this and may just have learned something from previous outbreaks to handle this one better.

But if you think you know better because you've got a few stats on swine flu, crack on.

Just been down the local supermarket as i needed kitty litter.

None to be found in 4 stores. Seems to be that the hoarding/doomsday prepping has started in earnest. The following items were nowhere to be found.

    Toilet paper
    Hand wash and sanitiser
    Kitty Litter
    Pasta
    Baked beans
    Rice, flour and sugar
    Mincemeat
    Sausages
    Chicken breasts
    Bottled water
Eggs are few and far between

I predict the next to go will be :
    Cling Wrap
    Vitamins
    Bread
    Tinned meats

One of the appliance retailers here has seen a 390% increase in sales of chest freezers over the past week.

Just seen on ebay someone selling a 20 pack of toilet roll.

It normally sells for about $17 over here but it's already got 18 bids and is up to $145

What gets me is that people are friggin bidding on it.

FFS, if it does actually run out then use a flanel and friggin wash it. I guess that's the problem with today's society as they dn't know how to use anything that requires a little bit of effort.

If everthing does go to lockdown (other than supermarkets, NHS etc) shouldn’t government be offering workers within these sectors some kind of incentive to attend work? Without them we are royally f^cked during times like these.
I can’t see the incentive for shelf stackers, till workers hours to risk their health for minimum wage and that’s without the buffoons they’d have to deal with fighting over tissues!

Someone sent me a video the other day from a supermarket in Spennymoor - the shelf where the standard penne pasta had been was completely empty, but the shelf above was absolutely full of linguine. :emoticon-0102-bigsm

I'm already supplied with an 'old tech' solution for when we run out of bog roll.:emoticon-0101-sadsm
    Two sponges per person.
One for cleaning, one for polishing.
Rinse well after use and re-use.:emoticon-0102-bigsm

Roman legionaries carried a sponge as part of their kit, for just this reason.

Hard to think of anything more old tech than that.

Still, I hope I don't have to resort to it.:emoticon-0145-shake

I’m not stockpiling water. I get it delivered daily anyway . And do people buying all the flour realise that you have to mix it with other things and do that - oh what’s it called - oh yes , “ home cooking “ thing .

Well the job I was returning to the UK for has now been deferred until July when they will review. ( no chance the situation will have changed for the better by then) Also my flight back home has been cancelled as I was due to fly through Athens..so thats me stuck here in the UAE, with no job and very soon no visa to stay here.... Interesting days.

Hopefully it sorts itself out for you soon. Can you book a different flight with an alternative route to get you home?

I feel for you mate, there will be some terrible consequences.

I recently posted a thread when I couldn't decide between a highly paid job in Devon or an easy number in the south of France.

On the advice of certain people on here, I know who you are, I took the easy option.

I now know I made entirely the wrong decision ...

    ... thankfully I always have a Plan B but many thousands don't.

Cheers Smug, I actually do have a Plan B but it means another country and I'd already geared myself up for the UK..but never mind, onwards and upwards and i'm sure there will be millions of people who don't even have a Plan A in this current crisis.
