Italy has the second oldest population in the world, after Japan, though Germany are third and they've so far seen a much better outcome.

The Germans have a very law-abiding mentality - if Angela says stay home then the majority will stay home.

Roughly a quarter of Italians are over 65 which would probably explain the high rates of confirmed cases and, sadly, deaths. The other factors could be that there are loads of families living with their elderly parents and that they are also a very tactile nation,a bit like Spain,France,Belgium etc.

On the other hand the Germans, like us,are a bit more stand-offish and don't shake hands or kiss at the beginning of a shift etc(they also have an extremely high rate of hospital beds per capita). The one thing that I worry about in the U.K is the London situation, that could see confirmed cases go through the roof due to spread on tubes, buses and a bit of stupidity in not listening a week or so ago.

I don't know where you live, but if you can get to it, Cottingham has four shops (Co-Op, Aldi, Heron and Sainsbury's) as well as a BP garage that don't seem to have been panic stricken by locals. I went into Aldi yesterday evening and they had everything, pasta, toilet roll, meat etc and it was very quiet.

    Hope this helps.

i agree with this, if you avoid the BIG supermarkets almost no disruption to supplies. I’ve had to change my shopping habits to smaller places, but always got everything I need

We’re going to have a massive surge in 2-3 weeks I would have thought, this weekends events probably couldn’t have spread it better if the RAF flew over the country dropping it in cluster bombs. Hopefully the measures announced since will prevent those who have caught it from further distribution.

Thanks, but I live in a galaxy far, far away in the Midlands. Out in the countryside. I live in a very large village with about 8 shops including a big co-op which are all empty but have also been to the 3 smaller village shops across the other 2 villages I frequent.

I gave my mum a fair shopping list in the middle of the week as she was going to Morrison’s and all she managed to get off it was a pack of child’s bananas and some garlic bread <laugh>

We were re supplied last night by our family, they went to our local Lidl and it had just about everything that we needed, it was quite late so not much meat or toilet paper. Somehow we have ended up with two cauliflowers this week, one of which has been part cooked and put in the freezer ready for use in a couple of meals.

People are still queuing to get into the bigger stores like Morrisons and Asda, but the smaller ones seem to be ok.

We're finding exactly the same - people are distancing too, it's about time.

BREAKING: The UK has recorded the highest number of coronavirus deaths in one day after another 87 people died across the country - bringing the total to 422.

Sadly, it seems it's still roughly following the same increases as Italy.

We have the lowest infection total in the country.
No reason to gloat, but let's keep it like it is now - almost non existent in the HU postcode area.

'11,788 people have answered the call to return to the NHS... and 5,500 final year medics and 18,700 final year student nurses will also move to the front line to help the NHS' says Matt Hancock.

4,000 extra beds being created at the Excel London. This will be temporarily named ‘Nightingale’ after Florence Nightingale.

That's far better than calling it Florence after Florence in Italy.

Government has bought 3.5 million antibody tests
Speaking about testing, Mr Hancock says he understands why NHS staff are so keen to get testing ramped up.

He says that the government has bought 3.5 million antibody tests which will allow people to see if they have had the virus and can get back to work.
