Buy her a telly of her own. That way you'll look caring and magnanimous and be able to indulge your own viewing predilections at the same time.

The world really has gone mad! A candidate went for a second interview for a manufacturing scientist role with a synthetic DNA company last week. On Friday, I found out he was unsuccessful for that, but the hiring manager had contacted a colleague as he felt he was just right for a molecular biologist role there. This morning, I spoke to the candidate, who was aware and had already spoken to the other manager at the company.

At 5.20 pm, I got an email to say they wanted to offer my candidate the molecular biologist role on a basic of £31,000 a year. He's literally only just finished his PhD. I was over the ****ing moon, given the current circumstances. I phoned the candidate to give him the great news, and he said "31,000?". I couldn't believe my own ****ing ears. I actually told him I was shocked he even questioned the amount, and he said it was because he had worked in industry prior to his PhD. I ran through the benefits package (which is good) and reiterated the current world climate, but he wants closer to £35 K. I almost hope the company pulls the offer, the greedy **** <grr>

I've always worked on the theory that once you have a job
    a) your immediate needs are covered
    b) much easier to move on to a better job than from being jobless as credentials are established.

hey don't knock it - he got a grand & you got your commission and the company are thinking "phew we would have given him £35k if he'd pushed it" .

Best not to accept the first offer, even if you feel like dancing around the room in front of them.

I was having a pint with one of our directors a few years ago and just mentioned I felt I was in a rut and was pondering what to do. Next day he called me with a new challenge, move to a different department in the company, and a £9k rise. I said I would think about it then danced around the room before calling him back a couple of hours later to advise that having discussed it with my wife I would accept. The delay being the Mrs and I had gone for a lunchtime steak at a local pub to celebrate.

When I mentioned being in a rut I had not made any enquiries about moving on, I was just cheesed off after a bad week with pain in the backside staff at one of the offices I ran at the time.

I went out for a walk for the first time since Friday night earlier on today. Trolled up to the CoOp (empty) and bought a few bits and bobs. My (sort of) return route took me past the beer garden at the back of the Cheese and the landlord just happened to be outside creosoting benches. He very kindly invited me into the south-facing garden and we sat in the lovely sunshine quaffing Corona, whilst keeping over two metres apart. It was just as though nothing was wrong <laugh> The Corona was free <laugh>

Erm, no Sis. That was the first time I've been out of the house since Friday. I took a chance as it's a lovely day and the beer-garden is south-facing <ok>

Just don't buy into the mass media and social media driven hysteria ... clearly it's a serious situation, but be sensible and you'll be fine
