    Breaking news (27 March);

Tiers 3 to 6 of the National League have agreed to end the 2019-20 season now.
All results will be null and void - and will be expunged from the records.

    No promotions, no relegations.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52052351

This does not affect the National League (5th tier)
Or the 6th tier National Leagues North & South.

It applies to the four levels below that.

I reckon the Vanarama will follow suit.

In my opinion this should be done across the board.

The complications involved in trying to finish this season in any league are just too difficult to practically overcome in my view.
And when is the NHS going to be able to supply hundreds of ambulances and paramedics to football matches every Saturday & midweek for months in a row?

It is not reasonable to demand that of them, just to satisfy the desires of the handful of Clubs which still have anything to play for.

As things stand the 30th April is a joke of a date for resuming football.
Everybody knows there is zero chance of this happening.
The best thing to do to support the Health Service would be to call off the entire 2019-20 season NOW and make it clear there will be no football until August at the very earliest.
Then expunge the results, no promotion or relegation.
And make the 2020-21 season a re-run of 2019-20 (same fixtures on same dates) like they did in 1946-47 when they re-ran the 1939-40 season.

This would avoid all player contract complications, and would make the position 100% clear to everybody.
It is lack of clarity that wastes resources and leads to bad decisions.
The Premier League, FA and EFL need to wake up and acknowledge how grave this situation is.

You cannot just re-start the season in three months time like releasing the 'pause' button on your video.
    Everything has gone to sh*t.
The fixtures will descend into a chaotic farce.
Every manager and his dog will scream foul because he's lost half his squad, or any number of other reasons.
It will be a total fiasco.

Football needs strong and clear leadership - not endless worrying about losing revenue.

Does this mean if it is carried out across the board we can't be relegated if we go into admin?

I guess if the 2019-20 league is re-run in 2020-21 we could not be relegated because of administration before the season begins.
But we could find ourselves beginning the season with a 12 point deduction already in place...
(or however many points you get docked for administration these days).

However, even if the 2019-20 season is declared null & void and all results expunged, I suppose the 2020-21 season does not have to be a re-run of 2019-20
I just assume that would be the easiest option.
The sequence of games and fixture dates aready in place, so no need to work them out.
And if the teams are all the same ones, why bother changing the schedule.

Of course if a number of Clubs actually go into liquidation - which could happen to us - that will damage the leagues.
I suppose the affected leagues would just have to go ahead with a reduced number of teams involved.

The main point is that I think next season should begin without any promotion or relegation from this season. For any reason.
I just think that is the option that offers the least number of logistical (and probably legal) headaches.

I want this season to be finished, by hook or by crook and however long it takes. My non-league team, Concord Rangers, are a two-legged affair with Halesowen away from the FA Trophy final at Wembley. This constitutes a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the club and its band of loyal followers. The tiny clubs up and down the land deserve their day in the sun just as much as the big boys, and it is of course the grassroots clubs that form the bedrock of our national game.
I fully understand the arguments for why this season should be abandoned, and I accept most of them, but I'm being utterly selfish in my view. In short, I just want to see my favoured 'little' team play on the world's biggest stage.

I'll be astonished if the 2019-20 season is completed (plays all its fixtures) in any league.
And the lower down the pyramid you go, the more unlikely it is.
Tiers 7 to 10 have already called it a day.

This virus crisis will do lasting damage to the NHS and other vital services (Police) and the economy.
Things will not be simply 'back to normal' as soon as the lock-down is lifted.

Even as far ahead as July or August, I cannot see how medical and policing services could justifiably be diverted to looking after four weeks of football matches every three days. Let alone the ravaged squads, contract wrangles and everything else within the Clubs themselves.

Then we have the frankly barmy prospect of a 'half' season in 2020-21, possibly with teams playing each other only once.
Titles, promotions and relegations will be barely credible after such a reduced competition.

Still, anything is possible. Let's see what happens...

Trouble is, no way can it start again on 30th April.
Say they roll it to May, then June.
Charlton for instance, will have a severely decimated squad due to contract ending.
Lots of teams have shirt deals and sponsorships that end in June and new ones in place.
Also, nobody knows how many players will get this virus and what health implications it will have on their ability to train and play once/if recovered.

Only viable conclusion would be to end this now and allow teams to do whatever possible to save their clubs in the shirt term!!

We're all in the same boat, extend the contracts until a conclusion.

Next season is going to be affected either way.

It does not affect us a great deal as we'd have folded when normal service resumes.

    @TC (Lovely Geezer)

If you ended the season now, all that would happen is clubs like Leeds & West Brom heading straight for the Courts.

Trouble is, lots of teams need to start raising cash - only way they can do this is season ticket sales for next season.
    Needs to be sorted soon!!

We would be unable to field a team if we were asked to play after the contracts ran out. We may well be bankrupt before then anyway if Nimer and Southall continue to plunder the club.

Read today's issue of The Times.

Fifa are putting big pressure on the contracts being extended until a season's conclusion.

A season extension would present a possibly unique challenge to Charlton. 80% of the squad out of contract or loans. Although if ESI are still with us, we may already be out of business by then.

That’s assuming the club’s owner has the money to pay them.

Would you watch AFC Charlton if we were to fold?
