I’d need a bit more info first. Is it true, for example?

If it’s in the Mail it must be true

Just been out for my first walk of the day with my daughter and my dog. It took ages to convince my daughter to come out with me, such is her concern about contracting and passing something on to me or her mum. She would prefer to stay in for the foreseeable. I resent that enormously.

The people we encountered in the woods were calm and pleasant, but kept their distance, absolutely fine, we did too. Passed a few people on the pavements, all of whom adjusted their direction or stepped into a gap between cars to maintain that gap.

We stood at an island on a local main road waiting for a handful of cars to pass and observed a bus stop. My daughter said ‘there’s someone getting on’, I said ‘I wonder where these cars are going’, then as the bus went by she noticed it was pretty full and said so, surprised.

Then we popped into the local corner shop, no restriction on numbers, almost impossible to be 2m away from each other. Peoples’ behaviour is so strange. A guy needed something from where I was standing, and made strange attempts to close in and strange noises whilst doing so, but then backed away, as if we we both positive ends of a magnet.

The final 5 minutes home from the corner shop, we laughed, sort of, at the strangeness of the experience and that if someone had told you 2 months ago about the interactions we’d just had and the things we’d just said, you’d not have believed them.

I might write a black mirror episode along these lines. I might call it ‘Repulsion’

On a similar note, I was pleasantly surprised at the behaviour of the numerous runners I’ve encountered during my daily run.....everyone of them has given me distance (as did I to them), going into the road if safe to do so and had a little wave of thanks and appreciation between us.
I’ve been doing the same for the mums with pushchairs who seem to think it’s only them that have a right to walk smack bang in the middle of the pavement, but sadly don’t often get the same acknowledgement.

But there are risks in running. I haven’t run for ages, as I don’t enjoy it much unless I’m chasing a ball, but for the last year I have been a gym regular, mostly cardiac, so reckon I’m fairly fit for a bloke of my age. Now the gym is closed, so on Wednesday I went for a jog. I misunderstood the couch to 5 km ethos and ran, very slowly, for 3 miles (nearly 5 km) with no build up. As a result I have ached ever since and suspect I need two hip replacements. It’s much harder on the joints than gym equipment, but it also gets the heart rate up quicker.

Might try a shorter, even slower, jog tomorrow. Have also been happy with the social distancing efforts of people I have encountered while out on sanctioned exercise/essential supplies foraging.

I feel your pain G. Hate not being able to go to the gym for my 2 hour fix and having to substitute it with a 6-10 km run almost everyday is not my idea of fun.
At least in the gym I can watch TV to take my mind off it

Based on the latest government figures only c. 14% of those tested to date have tested positive for coronavirus.

I’d really like the Oxford projections to be true, ie that a substantial proportion of the populace have already had the virus, but can’t see how this can be the case given the 14%. Surely, it would be much higher than 14% if Oxford is right?

Then again, we’re back to the question of whether the government-released figures are only for those found to be ‘positive’ at the time of testing, or if they also perform and include the ‘antibody’ cured people too.

Can anybody provide any clarity as to how the official figures are derived?

Wow 10km, that’s impressive sir. Of course the treadmill my wife ordered will not be delivered so that option gone. Can’t even buy a couple of dumbbells for resistance without massive mark ups and very uncertain delivery.

This crap bloke seems to be the Business Secretary. Perhaps someone could ask him about profiteering.

We’ve just been talking about the same thing. But the test used at the moment only shows who actually has the virus, not who has had it and recovered or shown no symptoms. But I was under the impression that to date we have been testing people who have been in hospital with symptoms, so the figure of 17,000 positive tests out of 120,000 is really odd. Would imply that over 100k people have turned up at hospital with symptoms of something else.

They’ve rested the first team who are carrying some knocks. Not a great debut from the reserves.

Last year I was running 30km at a time and considering doing a marathon. But slowly got bored of it and enjoyed the gym far more.
I will say though, by doing ‘fartlek’ training on the treadmill, my times when out on the road are vastly improved.....10km in sub 50mins ain’t bad for a 50 year old.

So the NHS medical officer has said we are not at capacity. That is good news and puts to bed some of those previous fear predictions.

Actually that makes 5km in 30 minutes for a 59 year old not too bad, with no build up. Shame it’s crippled me.

That’s actually a very good time, age and build up considering. You should be well pleased with yourself

Quite. It doesn’t make sense to me. Who are these 103,000 people that needed testing? I hope they’re mainly NHS personnel and the genuinely sick rather than the privileged few or simply a load of Munchausens.

We were preparing in January? Leave it till the end of March before testing frontline staff. Some preparation that. These daily briefings are becoming tedious now. Italy and Spain locked down yet death rates increasing every day. Same with us here. It's really strange

He was also very clear that 20k deaths in total is a good result, which will only be achieved with continued compliance to social distancing. Clearly didn’t want to play with the lower estimates being bandied around, I think wisely. Anything that makes people think “this isn’t so bad” and relax is not good, we are still nowhere near the peak of this.
