For complete escapism, allow me to recommend the Lemmy Biopic on Netflix. Someone comments that after a nuclear war, the survivors would be the cockroaches, and Lemmy.

I know he’s technically dead, but he’s out there somewhere in the galaxy screeching out the Ace of Spades

Watched 1917 yesterday and a war film, The Man With The Iron Heart on the Iplayer today and they were even more extraordinary times than now.

We will get back to a new normal which will not be like the normal of old that we are all so used to.

The issue here is that with '1917', and every other film about the First World War, Second World War, or any/every other war from the times of the Babylonians up to and including now, and beyond (Flash Gordon, etc), is that humans were fighting a known (aka visible) enemy, even if the enemy was other humans.
We are currently fighting (or in some cases, not fighting) an invisible enemy, that can pervade everyone, and takes no prisoners.

I am reminded of a scene in the Walt Disney cartoon film of King Arthur and Merlin (can't remember what the film was called, and can't be arsed to look it up), when Merlin was fighting a witch. Each character took on the shape of a larger and larger/more and more vicious creature, until Merlin took on the guise of a virus, which overwhelmed the witch.
This is either deep and meaningful, and remarkably prescient of the current situation, or a pile of dingos' kidneys, depending on your perspective.

Friends and family that I am speaking to are all suffering an odd form of boredom. It's not something we seem to be able to relieve either, because even though we have plenty of tasks and chores we could do to keep us occupied, we all seem to suffering the same apathetic malaise which stops us from being bothered. Very peculiar. Is it depression?

Yep I have a few friends exactly like that....me included.

Not sure if it depression as being a home worker for the last 4 years my life hasn’t changed much as I only left the house for food or dog walking to be fair.

    But life feels different.

I am finding it hard to imagine feeling safe in a crowd of 30,000 singing “oh when the saints” again, but maybe that is depression...

Well, I was self-employed up until last October, which often meant I worked from home, but I never felt like this ever before.

Often, people who clearly don't feel in control of their lives exhibit anxiety and stress. We aren't in control of our lives, but I honestly don't feel anxious or stressed, where as I have once or twice in the past. I just feel very odd. It must be a depression in a different form. I felt it first whilst I was queueing outside the chemist for that prescription yesterday [friday]. Everyone there was in the same situation, but nobody talked to each other. It was if we were all isolated in our 6ft of separation. Really, the weirdest of feelings. It was made oddly worse that the sun was shining too. Something warm and friendly, yet I felt no pleasure from it.

The question I have, and which no-one has a clear answer to, is: "why will this current situation end?" What will stop it?
From the "enemy's" (aka Covid-19) perspective, there is no end point. With wars, it is all about domination of a given area, even if this is the entire world. With a battle against another organism (a virus), there is no final target. The virus will simply continue to infect any and every human, with no ultimate goal.
Unless and until something (a vaccine?) halts the progress of this virus, there is no reason to suppose that the virus will simply 'die out', and we (humanity) will be able to pick up the pieces and continue from where we left off.

I am painting a very dark picture of the future, and I'd love to be proved wrong, but there is no obvious end to this, beyond the removal of people from this planet.

I had a similar conversation with a guy in Sainsbury's the other week (from 2m away).

He said in the queue the that "you guys wouldn't have survived in the war".

I replied " You may be right but in the war I have read all the history books and I don't remember seeing Germans around us in supermarket queues or on the street ever. I seem to have read that you could go about your life, then go to an air raid shelter when you heard the warning"

He didn't get it and started muttering that we were all wimps and need to man up....

The end comes when enough people are infected and die or survive. Surviving builds up immunity in the population, so the virus isn't so easily passed on. In the meantime, a vaccine is being express developed. It's a gloomy picture, and frankly, the vaccine can't come too soon.

He was 100% wrong. It's a different situation. The enemy can't be seen and it could even be your best friend.

It will pass because everything passes.

And for the non Zen answer, it will pass because scientists will discover an antibody.

Dumb ****ery Award Of The Week

The dumb ****ery award of the week has to go to our beloved government for wasting a **** load of money and resources on the creation, printing and mailing a letter (at an anticipated cost of £5.8m) to every household in the country to warn us that things might get worse, before they get better. As if we didn't know that, you ****ing retards. Ever heard of the Internet, Newspapers and TV?

Instead of wasting time, effort and money on bat **** stupid ideas like this, how about focussing on procuring ventilators and protective equipment for our front line medical staff. Rather than waffling on about how ****ing serious this virus is and telling us a bunch of lies about how many millions of (utterly useless and out of date) masks have been delivered to the NHS, just **** off and do something useful.

Well at least most of you are close to your immediate family. As my wife and I are making the most of being stuck in Aussie as we can’t get a flight home!! Mind you there are worse places to be stuck to be fair. At least we are in touch with the children on a daily basis. Tomorrow we have to renew our visa which is going to be a lot of fun!!
