You haven't realised that Spain and Italy have already got a market on their doorstep which will take their products

The UK market is hugely important for Spain and Italy. They will not want French fishermen thugs blocking Calais. The alternative would be to divert trade to Zeebrugge leaving the poor Pas de Calais region even poorer than it is now.

I am sorry SH but you are totally out of touch here. France said last week that it was seeing a shortage of salad from Spain and fruit from Italy. This was simply because the two countries are in lockdown, and it would take whatever the countries could produce. They don't have to think about border checks that created big delays at the Channel ports last week, mainly in Dover. If you were a businessman trying to recover from a major crisis, would you send something a thousand kms, with possible delays meaning your produce was not as fresh as it could be, and receive lower prices when you could send something up the road and get top prices for it? To date it has been the English fishermen who have seen their shellfish market into the EU die overnight. The UK gets most of the fish that it eats from north of its fishing waters, and so there is no quid pro quo there.
A couple of years down the line possibly markets might start to recover, but to still think that the UK is a major player is not really very sensible.

Post Brexit there will be a great change to present practices. After the Royal Navy sinks a couple of illegal French vessels you may need to keep your head down for a while.
The Spanish and Italians will want to keep the lucrative UK market fully supplied.

I'm not sure that I would use an analogy with World War 2 Frenchie. Of all of us here I am probably the most at risk because Germany has the third highest number of cases in Europe - and NRW is the epicentre. Yet I know that if I sit tight and keep my head down that I will be ok. This is a different thing from my mum giving birth during an air raid (to my older sister) in which she didn't know if tomorrow was actually going to be there. If this is our biggest crisis for 75 years then we have had it incredibly lucky - other parts of the World would not say the same. Judging by the available graphs both Italy and Switzerland have reached the high plateau stage in which (following the Asian pattern) numbers of new cases should be dropping in about 2 weeks - by the end of April most other European countries will have followed in this trend. Having said that, falling numbers of new cases is insufficient reason to relax lockdowns - it would be very dangerous to do this too soon. As for the aftermath of all this - I will let that take care of itself. Maybe we will question the sort of globalization, and outsourcing, we want in the future. Maybe some countries will see that the state needs to keep control of it's resources. And maybe those middle class twats who chose to go on skiing holidays in late February and early March in the South Tyrol will pay more for this and those border line cases at home will receive more.

Maybe the numbers are so high in Germany is because they are testing more than others. 500,000 tests in Germany, and less than 10'oo0 in the UK within a week. My mention of WWII was because I was only really thinking in terms of Europe and how life might be different.
My suggestion was that no matter how this finishes, as it must, people will want better from their politicians. We have seen how much air quality has improved with the lockdowns, and I hope that people will demand solutions now they can actually see how traffic on the roads and air really does affect us.
Although I fear that many will simply say that it is over, so no need to bother now, I suspect that the economies of many countries will be in tatters, and people will notice a difference for years to come.

Germany did have some advantages Frenchie. The fact that they took in a million refugees over the last couple of years also ramped up their medical facilities - all of them were screened for incoming diseases and Germany was ready for the possibility of a minor epidemic then. There was a significant rate of TB amongst those from some countries. I agree that people will want more from their politicians - the real difference in South Korea was not to do with technology or infrastructure - but rather because they had a leader who recognized the problem quickly, and stated that she would drive this out of their country, and used all the forces of the state to do that. The reaction in most European countries was lethargic, and lacked central planning - a kind of 'wait and see' policy. I also have the feeling that if this had been an attack of Novichok as opposed to Coronavirus then the reaction would have been quicker because it could have been used for political capital.

Seriously? Twenty odd years of cod wars with Iceland and no ships were sunk. This jingoistic BS is both unnecessary and divisive.
We're in the ****, no doubt about it, and viruses don't recognise borders or economics and the sooner people fully acknowledge this and pull together on this the sooner and more likely we are going get through this.

That comment was not totally serious. The French are unlikely to accept reality they will lose access.

I heard a public appeal to companies from social services departments on BBC this evenings for masks, gels and other equipment.. Perhaps our friend with a stash could donate some to his local council.. Come to think of it he might get his face on the local paper for his good deeds...

Go to various social media sites and you will find loads of comment from UK manufacturers who want to help, but just get ignored by the government. One of the stories I have been following is now starting to get through to the main news services.
    https://www.bbc.com/news/business-5...=64&at_medium=custom7&at_custom3=@BBCBusiness
The whole way this government is operating is beginning to stink. As I said earlier, listen to what Ministers say, and do not take it at face value. Ventilators will appear in the coming weeks. How many weeks Minister? Still it keeps the donors happy.

By the end of the year Brexit will be entwined with both of the UK and EU member states recovery efforts. It will undoubtedly have an effect of heightening respective positions.
