One of the most controversial judges decision there has ever been in the sport.

Was there a riot? Did the decision get reversed?

No and no. Evander Holyfield's DQ in the 84 Olympics was nearly as bad.Even Kevin Barry(Joseph parker's trainer)his opponent was mortally embarrassed by the decision.

That was a really interesting outcome. Just as the judges were all over the shop, so too were the ringside media reporters who were scoring the fight. Of the 25 journalists there, 13 gave the bout to Leonard, 6 have it to Hagler and 6 had it a draw.

Ring Magazine named it the fight of the year, the upset of the year, and at a later point, the fight of the decade. The Hagler - Leonard fight was a big moment in the sport of boxing.

If anyone has a spare 48 minutes of free time and is interested in learning about the life and times of Sonny Liston, the clip below might prove useful.

I'll give this a watch whilst I'm bored at work later. The guy certainly had an interesting and troubled life/career.

In an era of monster punchers , this guy had probably the greatest chin in boxing history. And even these days if you see interviews about him, he has never shown any I'll affects...which is quite quite incredible.

Just had a bit of a scout around for news on George's career. What an athlete. Not only did he fight Ali twice, but was involved in a fight of the year against Floyd Patterson in 1965. He was also a 5 time Canadian Heavyweight Champion. In one of those titles, he was refereed by none other that the great Joe Louis. A really stand out feature of his pro career was winning his first 4 fights all on the same night. All by KO. 2 in the first round and 2 in the second round.

    True story,
A lad I know worked for 20 odd years with a lad called Russ who was a huge Ali fan back in the 70s. This guy wrote to Ali and got a reply. This in turn became a pen pal friendship for many years. One year Ali was in London and invited this lad down to meet him, so off this lad went to London. They met up and Ali asked him where he was staying? A b&b wherever was the reply. No says Ali you are staying with me for 5 days from memory i think at the Grosvenor hotel. So when they get there Ali of course has the best suite in the house, like a palace. So on the first night Ali says to him, you take the bed and i will be on the couch, No, no, no its the other way around, but Ali insisted. So the next morning this lad wakes up and turns over in bed aside him is a huge back, it is Ali who informed him after waking it was too cold on tbe couch. This lad from Newcastle eneded up having a lifelong friendship with the greatest.

My own claim to fame boxing related is meeting Tyson in NY around 2002. It was about 8am on a sunday morning and i leave my hotel in the Chelsea area of Manhatten and go walking off to find some breakfast. I see a shadow on the wall of someone standing in a shop doorway and right away i say to myself that is Tyson. The street is pretty quiet amd i go straight over to head towards him. He is wearing a long leather jacket and his hands are in the pockets. He sees me heading right for him and brings his hands out the pockets, i then start to twitch as he looks rather menacing. So i put my hand out and say Mr Tyson im a huge fan, nice to meet you. He then i think due to my accent relaxes and shakes my hand. He realises i am a Geordie as he worked with Glen McCrory for years sparring. So we stand and chat for 10 mins as he is awaiting a car to pick him up. A Merc appears and before he goes he says go to xxxx for breakfast and tell them i sent you. So i go for breakfast there and it turns out the owner is a boyhood friend of Tyson and Tyson bought him the diner near Madison square garden.

I read his book last year. Made me even more of a fan. If only Cus D'Amato hadn't left this earth in 85 I reckon Iron Mike would have been the undisputed greatest heavyweight of all time. His jail time for rape remains in my opinion a massive miscarriage of justice.

Don King used his tax lawyer for the rape trial. The lawyer decided that he should make out in court Tyson is an animal so she should not of went to his room, ffs. No wonder he went down.
The book is superb by the way.
If he had stayed with Rooney and not got hooked with King he would have been without doubt the greatest, but it is all buts and maybes. Rooney was the big loss, lost his dedication, combos and movement and the drugs got him.

Four fights in one night! I used to think Tyson's one fight a month leading up to his first title shot was impressive.

The 42 year old Carl Froch now want's to fight the 48 year old Joe Calzaghe. He's coming on all hot and steamy. I doubt if Joe will do it, but I'd love to see him put Froch in his place. I hope he doesn't accept the challenge though, 48 is just too old. He should just rest on his laurels and let Froch stew in is own bile.

There's no way Calzaghe will come out of retirement
