Right so I'm not going on leave yet. I do my job with another employee and we need to stay open as we store documents for the NHS and banks among other sectors. But we are very quiet so some people have gone on leave for 2 months whereas my colleague and I are doing a month each as one of us needs to be in. I'm going on leave in May.

Well that is a coincidence IOAG...... I ordered a Thorne Cedar Hive with a gabled roof last week and I'm just waiting for it to arrive. I have been thinking about it for a while as we have a very well known beekeeper locally. A few years ago I did a lot of photos and prints with him and his bees, and a selection of the images were used by the British Beekeepers Association as educational packs and sent to schools around the country. They used dummy hives and the prints were fixed in the frames in place of the foundation to show how the bees make honey. They looked really good when finished.

Anyway, I thought it was about time I kept bees because it is such an interesting hobby and as you know, local honey is amazing. Because our local beekeeper is getting on in years I volunteered to give him a hand with some of the heavy lifting, but that has been put on hold until this virus thing is over. We only have a small garden here but it is well planted with bee loving plants and maybe they will find some of the wild flowers I have been seeding round the area.

This is like the hive I just ordered .....

My allotment neighbour has a hive. I’m planting local wildflowers in one of the beds, as I love to bring the insects in. We get quite a lot of butterflies due to the nettles being a great food plant, so lucky to have the plot in these times. Somewhere to escape and do a bit of graft. Get some foxes and Badgers to.

Are we allowed to be at all skeptical of this disease or is that now totally in bad taste? There will one day be a weighing up of the damage shutting the country down is doing vs the damage the disease would have done. Not saying we have got it wrong, but sooner or later we have to open back up and take the hit - or a hell of a lot of people will suffer.

I posted last week my thoughts on that. The repercussions of a minimal three month shut down will be equally terminal as the disease. Already there has been a load of suicides. And by the time the recession kicks in, I imagine the anger will have spilled onto the street.
But, what you gunna do? Can't just ignore the Virus and its contagion.

Well that depends on how deadly the disease is. Sadly we now live in a society that does not accept death. By that I mean we are willing to take almost ludicrous risks to protect lives, not knowing the long term suffering it will cause.

Reading the FT article, the disease itself may be killing only 0.5 percent of those who get it. 1 percent are dying, but it is possible half of those were terminal anyway. The issue here is poor research, poor testing and a lack of decent medical facilities.

Nah, its far more dangerous than that. But again, destroying the economy & advising people to lock themselves away is equally as dangerous as anything this plague has to offer.
You watched the intro to Dawn of the Dead recently? <laugh> Its like Panarama in 8 months!

The point I am making is that the science we keep getting told we are following is based on bad statistics. They are worse than useless. The truth is almost certainly that the disease is way less deadly than it is made out. I would guess about around 1 percent but could even be lower. 1 percent is a lot of people, mind. And the disease is nasty.

I would also say that locking a whole country up for a long period is stealing our lives. 6 months is equivalent to over 400000 lifetimes in the UK alone...

What makes it so deadly is its accelerated rate of infection, plus a large degree of people will require hospital treatment. Stick those two things together and its a **** storm.
I guess watching New York over the coming weeks will show us just how good the call was to shut down.

Sure, if we have an exit strategy. Otherwise we are just delaying the inevitable. Or we can put the world on hold for a year waiting for immunisation... and watch the economy collapse totally.

I hear you. No way can the Gov pay out what they have said. The figure is pure madness. It feels like 2020 is going to set the tone for the rest of our lives. If we make it.

Sorry Kaito, I've only just seen your post.

My wife is the beekeeper, I only know what I've learnt from her. If you want to discuss it further we should maybe continue in the rabbit hutch thread. I've got a number of pictures you might like to see. She started with a hive in our small garden too but had to move them, luckily there is a farm down the road where the owner is keen to have them.

Yeah I am with you all the way. Old people use up scarce resources and make no contribution to the economy to be honest they are just a ****ing nuisance. They are going to die sooner or later so lets just make it sooner by helping them on their way.

The upside is that selfish greedy money grabbing young capitalists will get their hands on their inheritance sooner which is what they have wanted all along. Your caring compassionate nature has warmed my heart. I really like your philosophy of "Let's get rid of Granny so we can get our hands on her dosh". I must have been mad to have nursed my parents through the later stagers of their life. For some stupid reason I thought I owed them a lot for raising me from a baby and making sure I was nurtured, protected and cared for when I was at my most vulnerable. For teaching me so much about how to live a decent honourable life respecting and caring for others and for supporting me during all my difficult times. Hey but what the **** lets just push them over a cliff when they are old and we no longer need them.

On the other hand if you think it is great to let people die to save the economy how about you put yourself at the front of the queue.

Not sure I said any of that, but I am afraid that the decision to save some may cost others...

Last night' I watched an episode of Attenborough's wonderful planet series. The one has footage of Chernobel and the recovery it has made with all sorts.of plants and animals using the space vacated by humans. It is a good time for Nature with pollution levels dropping. This week dolphins have been seen swimming in marinas around Mallorca.

No. You inferred it, but I guess we read what we want to read.
