50% spread then. Still 200,000 hospitalisations. There were 101,598 nhs general and acute beds in England at the end of 2019 (excluding maternity, mental health).

What do you mean enforced for 100% of the population? I’ll say again, what would you do to isolate the elderly and vulnerable from interactions with other people, over and above that is happening now?

It's disappointing there's so much hand-wringing about this, if I was a player I'd be happy to sacrifice some of my wages to support non-playing staff regardless of government support schemes.

This really shocked me, this is the outcome of the closed cases in Italy so far...

Just imagine the numbers Spain and Italy would be hitting right now if they hadn’t been shut down for 3 weeks.

    Scary thought.

I suppose it reflects Italy's ageing population?

They should be encouraged to remain at home alone or in household groups and given a period of free utilities and delivery to promote, rather than enforce.

Italian elderly are still dying in large numbers despite nearly a month of lock down.

I don’t want to get myself a ban either, so I am not commenting on my political opinion of whether it’s accurate and will not engage in debate on this for the same reason, but you might want to start by looking at the extensive commentary on Twitter and elsewhere on Matthew Elliot and Tufton Street.

Germany has many more over 65's and a similar percentage of their population over 65 and their stats are radically different...

There doesn't seem to be a proper conclusion made on these variations.

Germany doesn't have a lock down anywhere as severe as the UK, Italy, Spain or what Wuhan had.

You know why that is? Even with social distancing measures and a conscious effort at increased hygiene best guesses still give coronavirus a higher R0 than flu.

    Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Unless everyone has been tested, no one knows how many have had and recovered from the virus.

That is what is happening in the UK - we are all encouraged to stay at home wherever possible, volunteers are already assisting the vulnerable with food and medicine deliveries, some are even getting free food parcels. Free utilities - well the free tv-license for over 75s which was due to end in June has been extended to August. They are all still getting their pensions as usual, so their ability to pay for their utilities hasn't changed. Food delivery from the supermarkets is usually free if you spend over a certain minimum account, or a nominal couple of pounds if you put in a small order.

Apart from the newsworthy incidents of over-zealous individual police officers, all isolation actions are still voluntary in the UK. No-one is stopping my mam going to Asda to get some groceries - are you saying it should be enforced that she should stay at home? How? Are you going to assign police outside her door? Get her neighbours to spy on her and inform if she opens her front door?

I would have preferrer your mother to have realised the severity of the situation and to remain inside for the few months until the wave of infection passes. I would also expect you to do what you can to help her with food deliveries and assisting with bills.

I was the one stating that I don't believe a full lockdown is a long-term good as it will result in increased problems such as unemployment and suicide amongst a different age category. There were 40,000 suicides in the US in the year after the financial crisis, of which many resulted from unemployment and the social issues that followed. Extrapolated globally, I believe this will be worse than the effect of the virus.

I think Germany has use of better ventilators? I may be wrong, but I think the ventilators used in Germany oxygenate the blood outside the body then feed the blood back in.

    Holy ****.

    563 more died.

    2352 in total.

And these are only the ones who died in hospital.

Italy were much further into their outbreak and their death toll was almost twice as high before they had such a large daily increase.

Spain had an almost identical increase at almost exactly the same point.

I’m not sure they’re better, I think it’s just the fact they’ve got plenty of them. Italy had 3,000 and had to decide who got one, Germany has 25,000 and everyone got one.
