What caliber of striker could we attract...?

  1. Optimistically, if we finished like 7th/8th this season, what caliber of striker could we attract?

We would have a brilliant midfield to support the striker, Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Marveaux, Gutierrez.

The only stumbling block i see is the wage cap. If we did finish in a good position, would 50k a week be enough to secure the signature of a top class striker?

Do you reckon we could raise the wage cap? I think a wage cap is sensible, but i think keeping it the same may not help us.

What if a great striker would come to us, could score 20+ goals a season, but wanted 70k a week. Would you pay him the cash? Or would you look for a cheaper option?

I just hope fat Ashley doesn't just think "This team can finish 8th, i don't need to spend anything".

    That is what i fear.

I reckon 'w'e could attract a decent strike, but not a ridiculously expensive one.

We wont raise the wage cap, and 50k is enough to get a good enough striker.

  4. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. What if we really wanted a certain striker, but he asked for more than the wage cap?

Would we miss the chance to get a player that could really help us push on just because he's asking for an extra 10-20k a week?

If we can get players like Cabaye and Tiote on 50k, i don't see why we can't a decent striker.

Take a wild guess. Of course we (Ashley) ****ing would.

European based strikers are well within our wage cap.

We've got the people that can provide the chances ( and take some of them, themselves ) but it would be nice to have a top class striker to be able to take half chances.

In reference to your last point about Ashley settling, I'm hoping he relises that it is in his best interest to get the team high as possible... Say if we did finish 8th to attract a higher bid for the club, he should be looking to improve the squad to push for europe!!!

A team in europe which is stable and relatively low debt add this to a great fan base and big staduim would be an attractive club to potential buyers.

If I was a striker I'd love the chance to play in front of the midfield we have. Like Tash says though, wages is the problem. As soon as a striker hits 15 goals in a season they immediately think they should be on £100k per week. The situation isn't helped by strikers like Tevez, Berbatov and Drogba getting paid a **** load to bench warm.

I'm not sure whether I agree with the wage cap or not, I think it's sensible to keep the bill down but some players are worth big wages. I think the problem is if you end up in the situation we got in with Owen. If he'd stayed fit he would've been worth the money (lets face it he was world class before he got injured), but we ended up having to pay fortunes and getting nothing in return. You can understand the club not wanting to put all their eggs in one basket.

  19. Agreed. I said in my article that a wage cap is sensible, and i stick by it, but i don't think we should keep it at 50k forever. Of course if players agree to come for 50k or less i'd be over the moon, but i don't see why we couldn't sign a quality striker that wanted 60-70k if they were quality and could score around 20 goals a season

There's no point having the cap if you'll break it for a half decent striker, especially if players like Cabaye and Tiote are happy on 50k p/w. If we were to change it it would have to be for all players and we would have to pay the max (or close to it) to our top players.
