I think this goes back to something Sb talked about earlier... the expectation of instant gratification and having everything delivered on a plate. The world never was like that, and certainly isn’t now. This is the time to learn how to respond correctly and effectively to a dire situation where there are no easy answers of immediate gratification. Thousands expected to turn up and get into party mode, when they should have been expecting to be adults and act responsibly to the pandemic - but they couldn’t do that and have actively caused the increases within their ‘working’ environment (for which they took out the loans they are actively complaining about, rather than saying ‘I’ve got this loan, I better act responsibly and not **** it up’). And putting up signs ‘we need beer’ isn’t going to help get any sympathy from any common sense person. They need to ‘man’ up and smell the coffee. My business has suffered dramatically this year and putting up ‘beer’ signs won’t fix it. Complaining about my losses won’t fix it. Blaming Boris and his myriad of rule changes won’t fix it. I have to own my situation and get on with it. Act as sensibly as I can so as not to make the situation worse (and hope others do the same). I can put up with wearing a mask, not going to the pub or restaurant, not seeing family, not bitching, protecting others as best I can - it’s an inconvenience sure, but there are far more worse off than us (and they aren’t students heading off to Uni!). Or maybe I’m just getting old!?
You miserable old bastard! Think back to when you were 18-21 It's the kids and teenagers I actually feel sorry the most for. They were the best and craziest times of my life. At 43 I can just about remember them. I would have hated this happening back then. Remember, they were actively encouraged to go back to uni, as schools were too. Perfectly safe apparantly.
You rose-tinted ****er! There wasn’t anything comparable to this pandemic to be responsible for then. There’s plenty of things to feel sorry for our kids now... like housing and jobs (being responsible for your education you have the opportunity for, especially when you have term loans to pay back would be a good start). Beer and partying isn’t one of them right now.. and there’s plenty, a great deal of plenty, of time for catch up when we get through this. They were actively encouraged to get back and get an education, but also to be self-aware and responsible for themselves and those around them. You can’t go through life being a victim, own your life through your own actions! Your on the instant gratification slide Bob... I want it! And I want it NOW!
Queenslander our first Morocca-sceptic -in an unholy alliance with our Swords. Weren't you betrothed to him at the time?
Agree with Col on this. Bojo has not been the same since his illness. I was talking to my mate tonight and we got on to this subject. He said the same that after watching him today, he is a shadow of himself (and he is a Limp Dems voter). I did say recently that if you add everything together (new baby/Illness/being PM/Covid/Brexit/Economy)... and yes the f22k ups, you can see why he is how he is. If we/he hadn't had Covid he would have stayed on but I think he will get Brexit done and probably leave. This will cause a bit of a problem for the Tories as people like him more than Mr Wooden so they better get their act together if Gove takes over at some point.
I was at Uni in 1992...yes, even then partying a big part of life. But there were less of these mickey mouse subjects and if you got D's and E's ( or is that now 2's and 3's? ) you just forgot about going. I am digressing a bit, but if less teens were at Uni now then less would be moaning. To be fair, 9k a year is taking the p**s though!
Well my son certainly isnt like that. I suppose it's how youre raised. Students seem to be getting a lot of blame for the infection rises, my nephew at Sheffield university is certainly taking it seriously despite breaking the law by house sharing with 7 other people.
The yoooof don’t tend to vote Tory. Just shut up and live in halls sharing spaces with people you’ve never met from all over the country and if you get Coronavirus which for all we know might **** you right up in 10/20/50 years that’s on you.
Anyone who is willing to blame ‘Mop Heads’ illness(Alleged)/baby/Job Pressure for the appalling way he and his party have handled this ‘crisis’ truly have no hope. It’s just plain incompetence and the future generations will be paying for his incompetence for many, many years to come.
It’s almost as if the government are trying to divide us all and shift blame away from their incompetence......the Tory faithful will lap it up.
Nicely put, SW. You are correct, they do expect everything laid out for them. As a business owner, l hear what you are saying and like most, we don't bother to say how tough its been, its been tough for everyone in one way or another but when we hear of the younger ones whining about nothing so to speak, it can be certainly be annoying to say the least. Here in Australia, three irresponsible young people triggered of another border closure, not to mention the squillions of dollars in ramping up testing facilities and all they had to say was, 'Its no big deal, why is everyone treating us like we killed someone?" They were too stupid to think of the costs to businesses being forced to close ( for good ), the cluster of people who became infected because of their actions, not to mention, the deaths. As the old saying goes, "You can't put old heads on young shoulders." Hope you come through it all, buddy.
I’m sure you’ve done a great job too Bob (even at your age!!). As in many things minorities are often the exception. Only pandemic viruses don’t care about statistics and 80/20 rules. They just want a host and anyone careless enough to take it or pass it will do very nicely thank you. It doesn’t take much and people talented enough to go to university should be more than capable of knowing that and taking the right actions to make sure it doesn’t happen and ruin it for themselves, for their fellow students and for all those on the periphery of their self-centred lives
With respect to you both, What you say might be the case for some but definitely not for all, and as Bob says....it’s how they are brought up. My two studied (and partied) hard to get their degrees but have both found unable to get work in the field that they wanted (art and design and acting) so have both adapted and found other careers that they enjoy, one through the OB and the other through boxing and nutrition. They work hard, earn every penny they make and have started paying their loans AND interest back already. To lump them all as ‘lazy, selfish students’ who are to blame for all this, falls into a trap of blame, imho, and plays right into the hands of the government.
Staines you seemed to have reacted as Bob did and defend your own (quite rightly). However as I said to Bob... I’m sure you’ve done a great job too “[insert name here] (even at your age!!). As in many things minorities are often the exception. Only pandemic viruses don’t care about statistics and 80/20 rules. They just want a host and anyone careless enough to take it or pass it will do very nicely thank you. It doesn’t take much and people talented enough to go to university should be more than capable of knowing that and taking the right actions to make sure it doesn’t happen and ruin it for themselves, for their fellow students and for all those on the periphery of their self-centred lives The fact they adapted and found themselves in alternative careers is a total credit to them, Mrs Staines and a little bit to you Staines. It sounds like they will do very well in their journey through life. Words I wish I could give to all young people setting out ... there’s no hand-outs, it’s all about graft, application, effort and yes a little luck sometimes (but as they say you make your own luck sometimes). Hold on... I’m back to my earlier post theme
You’re sort of on the right path, however it still seems it’s becoming a bit of a ‘blame game’ between generations and communities. I could say, for example, the appalling number of older people who seem to be going about not wearing mask and thinking it’s someone else’s problem.....or the large family groups in the Asian community that don’t seem to care and meet and socialise when they want to, or the groups of Eastern European drinkers that congregate in the streets of Hounslow to have a few beers and a chat (and even the odd punch up). You see, no one is innocent Anyway, run time for me before the rain sets in......
Good post you’re absolutely correct on all other fronts about other sectors Staines. It has to be a completely holistic approach to beating this thing. Only you‘ve gone off topic as a distraction to the theme. The discussion was started by a question from Surrey about students and sympathy. Enjoy the run Staines and the clearing of the mind as you pound those streets ... great for the soul!
