Okay firstly Sb I am surprised you needed to show an article form a German news paper... I didn't think that was your style? However I am sure you would agree that in various countries around the World show respect differently. Anyone who believe that unis and idiots mobbing together are not an attribute to this are deluded.
Okay for what it's worth my better approach: I saw events in Australia and New Zealand of people at rugby matches and having low amounts of cases. So I investigated and yes, asked my mates who live in Oz to explain. Anyway they have put a ring around the country and have stopped people from just flying in. they have limited flights. In Perth Western Australia you have to quarantine on arrival and pay for it yourself. This is organised by the state (so I believe you don't have much of a choice. I also believe they send you to hotels). you can't just rock up there and mingle around like you can in the UK. You would agree that the monitoring of arrivals here has been hard to police? I have a friend who is waiting to get back home to Oz and says he is finding it hard. When I read that Melbourne had no infections on Monday you must take your hat off to them. I even believe they closed the borders within Australia making it hard to travel from state to state.
As a side note, I said at the beginning of all this that we should have closed our borders yet we continued letting in plane after plane from highly infected areas like the US/China/Europe. This could not have helped things.
As for lockdowns I believe they will only work if everybody and every country does it together. This of course will never happen but it would go a long way to stopping this disease or at least slowing it down where people can get on with life. This is a World disease and all countries need to work together to stop it.

Thanks for asking mate. Absolutely fine, she and her housemates maintained strict isolation discipline, existing solely on wine and cake from what I could hear, and emerged without a symptom between them. Teaching (online) has started again and she’s actually enjoying it, because she can lounge about in pyjamas all day. But she’s in her third year, with a good circle of friends and knowing the city well. Had she been going for the first time this year we would have strongly advised her to defer, and probably gone up and whisked her away when the chaos of halls of residence became clear. I feel very sorry for these kids thrown into a situation with people they have never met before. Anecdotal evidence from friends who have kids starting Uni this year (and a couple who are in second and third years) is that there are a lot of very anxious and unhappy kids out there - at least two have already left, citing anxiety. Not that I would draw universal conclusions from this small sample of course, that would the the act of a moron.

It seems Germany will also announce a lockdown from 4th November? Maybe it will be a joint timed thing with France? Perhaps nations should come together and work together rather than individually? I know what I said about different areas of infections but I am talking about as many countries as possible coordinating. Then see where we are.

Without all the red tape an unelected officials, I like that to... oh wait that's how it was before it became a monster. by the way on Covid, the various countries seem to be doing their own thing.
Anyway enough of that, did you hear the news on Germany and if so do you have an escape plan?

Can go around it if I really had to but the alternative plan is just to not come home for a bit longer.

The fella in the Great Escape went through Spain. Avoided France as there are many check points. Make sure you have the correct papers. Tally-ho :emoticon-0148-yes:
Im hearing it could be a 4 week lockdown. We will probably follow at some point.

Just seen a message from the university where my wife works. Many of the academics, while ‘working’ clearly have no intention to do any face to face work, as they have been living abroad for the duration. They have just been warned that they may end up having to pay tax where they are living as well...........keep an eye on the rules mate!

Bloody hell Emperor Macron just locked France down until mid December! Fair play to him for admitting to mistakes in the past however that won't go down well with the French public?

Better to just not admit to any mistakes and bank on enough absolute ****ing mugs believing you’ve done a good job.

For anybody who disagrees with lockdowns. a mix bag of things to report from over here. Ireland entered a level 5 (highest level) lockdown a week ago when new daily cases were between 1,000-1,300. Yesterday, they had reduced to 720 and today 675.

On the negative side, we have had three dreadful murder/suicide tragedies.

In the first one, a young Mother murdered her 7 month old baby son a few days ago and then threw herself off the M50 Bridge that spans the Liffey valley in Dublin.

The second tragedy happened yesterday in Co. Cork. A family with two sons in their 20's apparently had a disagreement over a will and one of the sons shot his Brother and his Father before killing himself.

The third tragedy happened today in South Dublin when a Mother and her two kids aged 6 & 11 appear to have been murdered by the Father. He has disappeared.

Lockdowns can improve infection rates but can also have a negative impact on people's mental health. Be careful folks and try to stay positive.

I have a feeling that my GP practice is operating in the same way. I 'phoned yesterday morning to get an update on the tests I had last week and was told that there were 'no more appointments today'. I said I didn't expect a face-to-face, I just wanted to speak to a doctor (you rarely get the same one twice). 'There are no more more appointments today' I was told again. 'Why is that?' I asked. 'We don't have any doctors' I was told, 'call back tomorrow morning'. Slightly stunned, I accepted this and called again this morning, only to be told the same thing. 'What?', I said 'You told me to call back today, what's going on?' 'You should have called at 8.30, all the appointments have gone'. Obviously, I wasn't going to take this lying down and kicked up a fuss, saying I was going to make a formal complaint unless I got a call back today. Unbelievably, I was then told 'Oh well, if you're going to make a complaint, I'll get you a call back'. Which she did.

It's a disgrace what's going on at GP surgeries.
