Fake pandemic? Since 2010 the annual death toll from influenza in the USA has ranged between 12,000 and 61,000 ... yesterday the US death toll from Covid passed the 250,000 mark and is rising exponentially ... in the UK we have topped 500 for a third day running...

I think it's a mistake for the government in the middle of a national lockdown to be talking about households meeting up for Christmas. It's the same mistakes as 5/6 months ago with talks of everyone getting back to work and eating out to help out.

Just sends out the wrong message, firstly undermining the current lockdown (which lets be honest very few are buying into anyway) and secondly the 6/7 week period between now and the New Year I expect people will see it as a green light to do what they want. It's like making the same mistakes over and over again and I fully expect we'll be seeing the same outcome again by January/February.

    Oh and...

respiratory illness accounts for about 650,000 deaths a year (that includes flu & pneumonia.)
This year there have been 1.3m in 8 months, this excludes any that didn't have corona as a factor.
    Can you do basic math?

Anyway, I thought you were ****ing off again, don't rush back.

I am sorry to hear about your mum though, I doubt I'll take mine going very well.

    Yep.

They're using the get in line with private sector pay again.

    Its bullshit.

Country would have gone to **** without civil servants.

Watching it on the BBC now and no mention of civil servants.

    Teachers this, police that.

    Things never change.

It’s been a good number of years when the public sector pay was in line with the private sector.

Am I the only one who thinks it's fair enough?

Obviously some professions are criminally underpaid anyway but I think that's a separate issue. Loads of people have suffered financially this year and public sector isn't, generally speaking, one of them, think as a general principle it's okay tbh.

We're all gonna have to pay this furlough back in one way or another. We'll probably still be paying it via increased tax in 20 years.

No mate. Who do you think kept the country ticking over whilst all the furlough ****s were sat at home doing jack?

So you're quite happy for public servants to get a pay cut and increased taxes :emoticon-0148-yes:

So with your line of thinking doctors and nurses should be getting a pay freeze. Are they?

'course not, that would be political suicide.

Public servants seen as soft targets. Always have been and always will be.

Oh and check out the max pay for the majority of civil servants. Just a midges dick above the national minimum wage.

I did say that many are underpaid anyway but that's a separate issue imo. There's rumours that the NHS could be exempt too though you could argue that's unfair on others.

I just think that it's down to society as a whole to pay all of this back. Increased tax is inevitable for everyone. You can argue that some people kept the country running but then a lot are also lucky that their jobs were unaffected by the whole crisis. Is it fair that those who lost their jobs and received no governmental support have to contribute?

I'm certainly happy to take a pay freeze for a few years anyway.

No need mate. I'll get by, I always do. Just putting across a public servants point of view.

Oh and the reason the government see us as soft targets is that our unions are ****e.
At one point in my career the unions had agreed a pay deal with the government that would see me reach my maximum pay for my grade in 666, yes, six hundred and sixty six years. ****s.
