Very true. I used to hide my emotions and problems, but I do feel that this forum and this this thread, has helped, simply just because it is a platform to open up a little. The support that I have had in words means a lot to me.

I'm hoping this will pass scrutiny. For any self employed people who are struggling and didnt and still receive any government help and need to just know you're not alone, please look at and join EXCLUDEDUK on Facebook. There are 3 million people in this black hole and on the Excluded forum some amazing help. There are people acting furiously to make sure Rishi Sunak addresses this and doesn't stick his head in the ground.

I understand the point of the post, but the political slant at the end isn’t really needed

The Tigers Sport & Education Trust are currently running a well-being programme to support members of our community during these challenging times.

The last few months have been far from normal for any of us. Daily life, our routines and ways of doing things have changed.

For the greater good we have had to go without seeing family and friends at a time when perhaps we need them the most. Our meeting places have remained closed and the world feels like a different place.

The only thing that remains normal is that we all need that little bit of support during difficult times.

Tigers Team Mates, run by the Tigers Sport & Education Trust, is there to provide that support. Set up for, but not exclusive to, members of our local community aged 55+, Tigers Team Mates aims to help individuals remain engaged with the world around them.
So far over 300 participants have benefitted from regular activities including check in calls, online activities on Zoom such as bingo, quizzes, memorabilia workshops and home workouts.

Support is available for shopping and collecting prescriptions, and we can also arrange organised walks and inclusive sporting activities, or even a chat at your garden gate (when Government guidance allows) or over the phone.

If you feel that you, or anybody you know, might benefit from the work of Tigers Team Mates please feel free to give us a call on 01482 358371 and ask to speak to Abdul or Josh, or email [email protected] or [email protected] for more information.

That’s interesting, Josh used to be a City player. Great to see that he has retrained.

So anyway.... It's a tough one to admit to this, so I'll try cut a long story short.

The thing is, I'm an alcoholic. You can probably tell that from some of my posts.

The thing is I'm getting worse lately and I'm affecting people around me. My better half (with my blessing) rang my GP today to see what could be done.

The first thing I do on waking in a morning is to think about Vodka and that's where I head to. I have to because I couldn’t possibly do my job without stopping the shaking. I do a specialised presicion job and if hands are shaking, I'd have no chance. I'd be out of work in a flash. I can't lose my job. I have people I need to care for and that's the the thing I'm most worried about.

I have to be there for them. I have to!

Does anyone have any experience on such matters?

    Thanks for listening x

I'm no expert, as I'm fortunate enough to be a boozer rather than an alcoholic, but from what little I do know, you've already taken what many see as the biggest and most important steps, in that you've accepted it as a problem, and shared that with those around you that matter.

It's great that they seem supportive and want to be involved and help. I can't offer you much more than a listening ear, and my respect for you accepting it and facing up to the challenge, you deserve a lot of credit for that.

Hopefully the Medical people will be equally supportive. Good luck on your journey. <ok>

My late Mother in Law was an alcoholic and it got to the point that her Daughter(my wife) gave her a choice, stop drinking or risk not seeing her family,it really had got that bad!!Anyway,it worked because she gave up booze immediately, sought help through the AA and remained sober for the rest of her living days.

You need to want to stop this, take one step at a time and you'll need the support of your immediate family....You can,and will stop....Do it now Kempton, pour the drink down the sink and look forward to better days,God Bless..Ric.

Well done for facing up to this. I've no experience of alcoholism but if it were me I think I'd be in touch with Alcoholics Anonymous. As supportive as your family will be they don't really know what you're going through, other alcoholics will and you may find they can be more help in the immediate term. Covid has curtailed their activities but they are still operating, link below. Good luck.

I have experience as a family member of someone in this situation a few years ago.

Well done for facing the problem. You GP will/should be pleased to help. You will probably be referred to some local support services who work with the NHS with the ultimate aim of getting you off the booze. I will warn you though, these services are underfunded so you will face some waiting lists at stages. This can be dispiriting (pun unintended) so hang on in there, you will get help.

As well as referral to alcohol services, your GP will want to assess your liver health and you may get referred to HRI or Castle Hill (blood tests, ultrasound). Your GP will assess your Vitamin B12 levels, as alcohol washes it out of your body, which causes anaemia and impacts your mental health. So you may get Vitamin B shots and antidepressants to try and right your body and brain chemistry.

When you’re mentally ready, you need to come off the booze, but it needs to be under medical supervision. If you’re lucky you may get funding to go to an inpatient detox centre (my family member went to Doncaster as they had the contract for Hull/ER at the time). If not, you do it as an outpatient, going to hospital each day. Basically you get loaded up on benzos to quash withdrawal symptoms, then you get weaned off the benzos. You may then be offered other support to help you stay off - medication, counselling, etc.

I don’t know what job you do, but talk to your GP about whether you need to go off sick if your job involves other peoples safety, or driving/commuting. Also, have a look at your employer’s HR policies. Some are enlightened and offer time off to deal with addictions. Consider whether it’s better to talk to them up front rather than waiting for someone to complain that you always smell of booze (and you will) and facing disciplinary actions.

This is a very selfish disease. Your other half and family will have been worrying themselves sick. You will get lots of support, they will get none as part of your treatment. The least you can do is stay honest with them, stick with the treatment and encourage them to get support in their own right. It has far reaching impact - one thing you may not have considered is that once you’re dry, your household will probably have to stay dry, at least initially, until you can cope with it being in the house and other people drinking in front of you, kissing you with boozy breath etc.

Finally, know that you’re not alone. Lots and lots of people have been in your position, and got help and turned it around. It will be hard, but everyone that I met in the system (as a family member) were enormously kind and really motivated to help their patients. My family member has stopped drinking, returned to employment in their profession, been discharged from the liver specialist and come off the antidepressants. I am so proud of their achievement and will power. It can be done Kemps, one day at a time.
