Ossie nearly signed him, according to Teddy Sheringham. Decided he had too much baggage.
He joined Newell's Old Boys and did **** all, so he was probably right.
He was Pochettino's roommate, though. Funny how these things work out.

There were also rumours at the time of the testimonial, but it came to nothing.
Won the league with Napoli, instead. <doh>
If Allen scored 49 goals in a season, then he probably would've scored about 100! <laugh>

    RIP Diego Maradona <rose>.

The greatest footballer ever in my opinion, he did it in an era of muddy pitches and defenders with license to kick opponents from pillar to post. He (almost single handedly) transformed a mid table Napoli team into Italian league champions, and was the reason for much of Argentina`s success. The greatest ever.

There is no question that Maradona was a genius footballer, the best of his and possibly any generation. In 1986 he virtually won the world cup single handedly, and he carried a 2nd even weaker Argentinian side to a 2nd final 4 years later.

Another taken far too young RIP

On a side note, you'd have to be monumentally crap at your job if you air an obituary about Diego Maradona that doesn't mention Napoli or Boca Juniors which also falsely claims the Hand of God knocked England out of the 1986 World Cup

This is what the BBC did

A great player but still a cheat. And not so much taken as gave it away. An obese alcoholic drug addict. Did well to last as long as he did.

I'm sure people said the same about George Best when he staggered off the mortal coil after burning through his second liver...

It's not false but it is debatable. England were the better team on the day and if Lineker had scored with his late chance we'd have been favourite

It is false, as Maradona dribbling through Beardsley, reid, Butcher (twice) and Fenwick before slotting it past Shilton is the goal that put England out

More than anything else, if a player is defined by breaking the rules in an England/Argentina match, does that mean Michael Owen's obituaries will mention he conned the ref for penalties in both the 1998 and 2002 World Cups?

That's semantics. If he hadn't punched the goal in then the other goal wouldn't have won the game. And I would draw a distinction between going down easily and punching a goal in the net. I never said he was defined by it, but I would argue it is a part of his story. As is being out of his head in the 94 World Cup and being sent home in disgrace.

This country's had a sociopathic fixation on the Hand of God for the last 34 years, so I'd say it defines him more than anything else

And that's the issue: Thierry Henry played basketball to send France to the 2010 World Cup at Ireland's expense but you don't see Irish twitter howling "CHEAT!" every time his name comes up, but mere mention of Maradona gets that response every single time
