when Thierry Henry pops his clogs, he will be forever remember for the hand ball goal at the world cup for France rather than all the good football he played. The same for Maradona. However, 60 is far to young to go.
    RIP

99% of the world remembers Maradona for the good football so I expect it’ll be the same for Henry.

FWIW, I think Henry’s ‘crime’ was worse. Certainly more sly.

In reality football is riddled with cheating in every match, players diving at every opportunity, contesting corners, throw-ins and anything else they can get away with. Maradona cheated us but if it were the other way round we'd have celebrated. He just happened to cheat better than us on the day. He was still the greatest player of his or any other era with no protection from the hatchet men Messi & Ronaldo enjoy today...

I’m sure if it had been the other way round and Lineker had handballed a winner in to the net we would have taken the winner. And probably been pissing ourselves over the Argies ever since.
To be honest when Dykes handballed what would have been the winner against Watford my first thought was to curse the lino for spotting it.

I suppose the Maradona handball goal is similar to Henry's cheating handball which lead to William Gallas's controversial goal. It wasn't actually at a world cup. It was a play off for the 2010 finals in South Africa.

The thing I always remember, was FIFA seeding big countries like France and Russia because they would bring huge companies on board to sponsor advertisements at the finals as opposed to smaller countries like Ireland. The seeding was only introduced once they had seen who had qualified for the play offs. This meant countries like France and Russia would play the second leg at home. They beat us over here in the first game 0-1 and we went over to Paris and were beating them 0-1 after 90 minutes and playing them off the park. The Gallas goal (with the Henry handball), happened in extra time with only a few minutes left and knocked us out.

About 18 months after that Gallas goal, a group of us went to New York and saw an MLS game involving Thierry Henry when he played for New York Red Bulls. His team got a penalty and our group were all booing as he stood up to take the penalty. The New York fans were looking at us funny wondering why we were booing their player so much. Henry ended up missing the penalty so we felt our booing had an effect and we got some sort of revenge. Over it now, thank god.

A very well worded point Sooper, I would like to add, in this less protected hatchet man era, you will see many examples of Maradona trying to stay on his feet rather than going for the dive.
On one hand I can understand people disliking him for the 'hand of god goal' but what I don't understand what little attention the referee and linesman get for not spotting the handball. IMO, it was a very a very clever reaction from him and I always will remember him looking over his shoulder a couple of times towards the referee and probably thinking to himself, I can't believe I got away with that.

The thing that struck me about that goal apart from the obvious cheating element was, how Peter Shilton really only jumped about 2 inches off the ground. Maradona was only 5'5 and yet he got to the ball first.

I’m good thanks Ellers, haven’t been on here much, as I’ve been busy with work and the twins are now two and a real handful!

I was intending to try and come back on here with more regularity for the new season.

    how have you been yourself?

Yeah, they want someone to blame, rather than blaming the cretinous, drug snorting little twat himself.

Bit childish IMO for the recently deceased greatest player the world has ever seen, mate.

I don't think that a player can enter the category of the greatest players that the World has ever seen based on one World Cup Windsor. This would be an insult to players like Pele, Johann Cruyff and Lionel Messi, who have/had graced the game for much longer, and put far more back into it than Maradona did. In order to become a 'God' in Argentina it was necessary to put two goals past England just after the Falklands War. Up to that time his club record in Argentina had been no better than many other Argentinian players, and at Barcelona he was more a disruption than anything else. Certainly an RIP is called for here, and I quite gladly give it - but extend it to all the other 60 year old junkies and ex junkies dying on a daily basis - who are mostly forgotten, but must have had some talent at something which, unfortunately, was never noticed. I cannot class Maradona in the same class as Pele, Cruyff or even Eusebio. If Cruyff had ever scored a 'goal' with his hand then he would have shrivelled up in shame on the pitch.

Fair points and it’s a neverending debate with no right or wrong answer and we’ll all have different perspectives depending on what we did or didn’t see live and what criteria we give weight to. I think it’s unfair to say his reputation is built just on ‘86 but to win a World Cup essentially single-handedly while being kicked half to death (even by the saints of England) is probably impossible now with football more of a team game and the tactics and fitness now, hence Messi not doing it but that shouldn’t be held too much against him. What he did at Napoli was incredible but again that’s reading and watching secondary sources rather than experiencing it at the time.

What I think is fair is that none of the players you listed will get quite the same outpouring of grief worldwide (our **** little island partially excepted) when they go.

And I can’t hold his coke habit against him. Quite the contrary.

I'd politely ask you to stop trolling my posts please.
As I understand it, it's against the rules of the forum.

    Thanks.

I’d even more politely inform you my post was genuine as the ‘RIP Maradona’ thread isn’t the place for such disparaging remarks for a wonderful footballer recently passed away. In my humblest of opinions only of course and as always I have the utmost respect for your views on this. Many thanks x
