So after a hard fought 0-0 with Fulham the games come thick and fast with West Ham making the trip down south. Romeu could return after being missing through suspension although Diallo didn't do anything wrong to harm his chances. Vestegard is out for at least a month so Stephen's could keep his place after keeping a clean sheet. Except changes up top as Ralph looks for someone to partner Adams, as personally I don't think Long is the man for the job. No news on the hammers front as they haven't played yet. Discuss.

    Referee: Andy Madley.
    Assistants: Scott Ledger, Richard West.
    Fourth official: Tim Robinson.
    VAR: Andre Marriner.
    Assistant VAR: Tim Wood.

Thinking about today's game and assuming that Redmond, Vestergaard and Ings are missing I might consider playing the same back five with Romeu for Long and Walcott going up top.

    Oriel in for Diallo
    Djenepo in for Armstrong
Don’t see the Ralph making any other changes
Shane needs another game to hone his not getting offside technique. It was a great goal ... almost

With teams at our level small margins can make big differences and being without key players raises the challenge of trying to maintain the standard of the first 11

Being without our best defender, best attacker and rock of midfield is massive but maybe a necessary test to find options that make us a better as a squad

Look what happened to Everton when they were missing Richarlison and that’s just one player in a very expensive squad

My main concern with playing Long up front is that he doesn’t hold the ball up very well.
A lot of our play is about playing it to the feet of Ings or Adams or by regaining possession high up the pitch, with the fullbacks and CMs then piling forward to give us more bodies to work a shooting opportunity, or to at least control the ball.
There is nothing worse than seeing Bertrand and KWP sprinting forward, getting past the half way line, only for the ball to be lost cheaply, and then it being launched into the gaps behind the FBs.
I think teams have identified that space as a way of getting behind us, and as a weakness, because it pulls the CBs across leaving gaps at the back post for unmarked players, when they counter quicker than we can retreat.
Although we would lose his runs from midfield, I think Theo better fits the hold up role needed, than Long, so long as he doesn’t keep going to ground trying for cheap free kicks that he rarely gets.

My main concern with playing Long up top us that he’s not very good, and I suspect is actually getting worse. I’d rather see if we can build on one of the youngsters promise (though I fear we don’t have anyone in the squad that’s going to pull up any trees).

We all know exactly how this game is going to go. It's become a Christmas tradition.

Saints play West Ham in the Christmas week, under the lights. Antonio, having barely featured during the season to-date, will find himself fit enough to start. And for 90 minutes, he'll transform into the Hulk - faster and more powerful than anyone else on the pitch, with Saints defenders just bouncing off him - leading to a positive West Ham result. And that's regardless of whether he players up front, in midfield, or even at RB.

And Trixter will come here for his annual appearance to gently take the piss!...:emoticon-0120-doh:

On the other hand, victory will taste pretty sweet if we manage to win.

I understand why Long isn't getting much game time, but can't be easy coming in cold. Lack of practice isn't going to make you better.
